Legend of Vox Machina S1x1&2 Reaction! [PRL]

How's it goin' out there in Patreon land?

Welcome to Patreon Request Live (aka PRL): a special treat made possible by one of our generous backers at the Grand Maester Tier.

Each month, our top-dog Patrons at the $50 GM tier can ask us to watch and react to ANYTHING* of their choosing.

If there's a show or episode you are dying to have us react to and it's not currently in our schedule, this is how you can make it happen.

As a top-tier patron, you get the earliest access to our PRL watches before we send them out to the rest of the patrons.

Most times these videos will not even make their way onto YouTube, so it's a very exclusive club!

This month, we were thrilled to watch TWO episodes of the fan-favorite show from Critical Role...

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA!!!

We had an absolute blast watching these episodes and if you wanna watch along you can click the links below.

Watchers In The Bar

**Almost anything! Shows must be around 30ish minutes in length and we reserve to refuse if it's something supremely problematic. But if it's within reason and we can find it, we will watch it.

Legend of Vox Machina S1x1&2 Reaction! [PRL]

Comments

I have played D&D since I was 9, and DM'd since I was 10. I have branched out into many other TTRPGs as well. But speaking of odd things a character has done that discomfited the DM: While I was DM, one of my players got mad because he was a Rules Lawyer and hated that I bent the rules often. He said I couldn't DM if I didn't know the rules. So, I told him I'd be happy to play if he was DM. He took over with a brand new dungeon, and the group rolled up new characters. I was a half-elf bard named Flint (I believe). DM hated half-elves and hated bards more. But he let me roll, one up and he smiled vindictively all the while, plotting against me I think. While playing, if I did anything, he protested and I would literally name the paragraph, column, and page of the player's guide that allowed it. From memory. (I had a near photographic memory back then.) When I chose spells, one of the spells I chose was Shocking Grasp, and Ralph (DM) snickered in derision claiming it was one of the worst spells out there as it only did 1d4+1 electrical damage. I insisted. During a battle, when all my fellows wee knocked out, I was the one last standing. I was on a knee next to the big bad and was down to one spell point. So, I reached out and grabbed the Big Bad's chainmail encased leg. I cast Shocking Grasp. Ralph snorted and rolled, max damage (5 points). I said, "hey, his armor is a conductor, and I used electricity. What about a bonus?" He reluctantly gave me one more point of damaged and seethed as his Big Bad had only six remaining hit points BEFORE I did my six hit points. I'd killed the Big Bad with the spell Ralph scoffed at with a character race and class he despised. Then he decided three trolls were going to attack. I had Flint turn around, heaving for breath, arms shaking as he lifted his bow, eyes wide to avoid letting them close in exhaustion, and growl. Ralph looked surprised, rolled for morale, and the trolls lost the roll. They thought they'd come across a deranged berserker and took off running. Then, I had Flint pass out from sheer exhaustion. Ralph looked at me and, with total respect in his face and voice, said he'd let me DM any time. We finished that dungeon before swapping back to me being DM. And that was just ONE of the unexpected or weird things I've don around my DMs or players. (Edit to add: this was back in the very early 1990s, and we were playing Advanced D&D or 2.0.)

2nd episode in best quote. "The Worst kind of Dragon a Scottish Dragon" lol

So glad you guys are watching Vox Machina! I watch Critical Role all the time and play DnD myself. Such a great show! Matthew Mercer is quite the DM

Sneaky Poptart

Thank you!

Matthew Rudolph

Yeah this show is super fucking backloaded I’m sure it won’t be a problem for s2 at all but I’m sincerely hoping their animation budget gets revamped. I love this style but the cgi clashed hard with the “hand-drawn”

Wow, totally was not expecting this - awesome surprise!! Huge thanks to JB! When I was in law school, I randomly noticed a Facebook post saying that Geek & Sundry was starting a D&D show with professional voice actors streaming on twitch that night -- I clicked on it and happened to catch the very first episode of Critical Role. After that I was *hooked*. When I moved to a new town for work, I met my closest friend in the area because I was wearing a Critical Role shirt at a food truck festival where he was working and he recognized it. I haven't kept up with the livestream of the campaign in recent years just because it's a huge time commitment (each week's episodes are like 3-4 hours long), but this brand and these characters and creators hold a special place in my heart. Love seeing you guys do some vids on the show - hope it grows into giving the full series a run on the channel! (Because this is the interwebz, though, need to throw on the disclaimer that I hope you don't walk on eggshells just because it's a beloved property -- half the fun of reactions is new viewers poking fun at some things that don't work or are silly. These first two episodes, based on sessions from before Critical Role started streaming their campaign, are some of the weaker of the season, since they were produced a bit later on as part of 'stretch goals' for the Kickstarter and obviously have to do a lot of introductions / setup / exposition.)

incredible!

As someone who is a former moderator for Critical Roles Twitch I'm so happy that you have started watching this series. I was actually moderating at the time the kickstarter launched and it was a crazy time. Laughed quite hard in that first episode when Sean you said that Pike had a blindspot for Scanlan, knowing that Ashley Johnson who voices her was in the tv show Blindspot for all of Campaign 1 and most of 2 so she missed chunks of story. Can't wait for you to get to the rest of the story.

LadyAmphy

Ah, cool! I'll look forward to that!

Rando

We did! We'll likely pick it back up before S2 drops]

Sean TankTop

We will eventually, but just these for now!

Sean TankTop

Glad you guys have started this series! For clarification, are you guys actually watching the entire series or just the two episodes that were paid for?

Rando

yeah! i'm so glad you guys watched this! It's a lot of fun

wickedwolf

Yessssss! I've REALLY been looking forward to seeing you guys react to this show xD

BeckettBaladas

Oh heck yeah! Really looking forward to checking out your reactions to this show later today! Thanks, generous Patron who made it happen!!

Tim Chaos

I was getting ready to post the same facts lol. And I am going to request more episodes too!

Da Big Appa

Did you guys like the series? If so then I can do my request for more episodes.

Da Big Appa

Hell yeah my man Dustin with the magic the gathering player type reference.

TrixieTurner

How fortunate that these two episodes are a contained intro and perfect for something like this.

TrixieTurner

Interesting casting you’ll probably find interesting as well, General Kreig aka Brimscythe was played by David Tennant yes as in 10th doctor David Tennant. Lady Allura is played by the same actor who played Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones, and Lady Brairwood is played by Grey Griffin who voiced Azula in ATLA

TheDudeJB

Hey! I’m really really glad y’all are getting it to this show! Yeah the first two episodes are really just setting up the world and kinda getting new audiences used to the high fantasy and adult nature of the show. Ep3 is where they really get into the meat of things with the “briarwood arc” ep1 and 2 are both pre-stream so this was the first that “critters” (fans of critical role) get to see some of these early events. The pacing is a bit weird until ep like 5 and then It reeeeeally picks up. The show is super backloaded, like a majority of the animation budget went into the finale. It can be super tricky with fan funded stuff cause 11 mil sounds like a shit ton of money (and it is) but for an animated series that 11 mil has to do so much damn work and it can really get bare bones. With Amazon going full-in on season two and the amazing response to this first season I’m really hoping they throw serious money into this show so the pacing and animation isn’t so up and down. The animation studio is titmouse and they actually animated Legend of Kora. I really enjoy critical role and this group of crazy nerds so I’m always more than happy to share my favorite hobby with others
