Alchemy is understanding, deconstruction, and reconstruction. Ed figured out that Scar just stops at the deconstruction phase and destroys what he touches. That's what Ed's flash of inspiration from Scar was. The crackles of "lightning" are just the energy of alchemy in action. It's not an elemental attack or anything, nor is it indicative of the type of alchemy being used. It's just a crackling energy effect. Not a spoiler at all, but there is no one master "whole" Philosopher's Stone. There are multiple stones, just as you've been shown. They are not fragments or parts of a larger whole.

Also, about what Ed did to break the Slicer apart. He basically stole Scar's move. When Scar was first introduced he said that Alchemists are "creators" but he just destroys. Ed realized he could also destroy with alchemy instead of creating.
