Death Note Ep. 37 Full & Uncut Reaction!

Hey hey Patrons!

Well gang, we’re here. The finale to Death Note. In all it’s messy glory.

The hubris of Light was too much and he gave himself away.

And if you’ve been on this journey from the start you know how positively delicious his breakdown is.

Which would be all the sweeter if not for Misa’s implied suicide.

Our goth-pixie chaos Queen was too crazily pure for this world (or this writer 😣).

This show, and our journey with it has been one of the most interesting and emotionally varied of any show we’ve ever covered and we thank you for hanging with us on this journey.

So we bud adieu to our fave raspy boi, one last time!

Death Note Ep. 37 Full & Uncut Reaction!

Last episode was a blast to watch with you guys! I loved hearing Near tell Light he's "Just a murderous psychopath" in the end. I definitely think that the pulling of heart strings, especially the part where Light is calling for Misa, is sort of meant to stir feelings of missed opportunities. Sort of reaffirming the superiority of choosing love, tolerance, and humility over whatever the fuck Light chose over and over again. I also didn't catch the possibility of Misa dying when I first watched this at 14. Uhg, of course. Poor Misa-- absolutely persecuted.

Such a fantastic series! This is my favorite episode.

Yeah it totally does. And in the Manga even more so. But I think we got a touch confused at how many unironic Light Stans we ran into like unabashedly praising him. Also the clear contempt the show has for all its femme characters, like maybe that’s some surrogate editorializing from Light’s POV, but it’s pretty aggregious any way you slice it. Ultimately tho, the show indicts Light, and that’s a plus and strike in the shows favor.

This is the first time I rewatched death note and I just realized the implication of Missa at the end, went right over my head when I was younger. I always loved the ending of this show cause Light went out like the little psycho bitch boy he always was and I thought Missa survived but I guess I can't have nice things lol

Joe Deschamps

We’re doing both!!!

Ok, with the finale here my thoughts are that I am actually far happier with the show that Light becomes evil pretty much immediately at the beginning of the show. I was listening to a podcast talk about this and they said that while the author claimed this series didn't have a "message", the hosts thought this show had a criticism of that kind of Japanese student culture in the beginning. I look at Light as kind of a Patrick Bateman type character but it is more about success rather than status. And that kind of success based thinking informs how he sees the world so binary. He initially thinks he was chosen to recieve the notebook, but Ryuk was like, nope. It just happened to be given to you. Making Light the villain protagonist and making him be evil almost immediately, there is no room for the audience to latch onto him as being "right" in any way. And even though that is the case, there are still people who I have seen do latch onto Light as being "right". This is one of the problems I have always found with some other popular shows when they have essentially a villain protagonist. The writers give the audience too much of a chance to actually be on their side, even when they are doing horrific things. Then the writer or actor expresses surprise when they find that people are big fans of the character even at the end. I've seen people upset with this ending where Light is shown as absolutely pathetic and trying to say it is out of character, even though time and again he has shown to be pathetic anytime something goes wrong with his plans in the past. That is why I like this finale so much, because it acts as a complete condemnation of Light.

Also the Author of the Manga said that Misa did probably kill herself after "someone like Matsuda let it slip that light had died" but thats also an Author saying "ehh probably" lol

Thanks so much guys, Love this show and this was a weekly highlight. Almost wish we didn't get double drops so this could go on for longer.

Quick question is JJK or cowboy bebop taking it's place? Cuz right now with season 2 of JJK coming back and the last two episodes have been hype. If you're trying to get more views that's definitely the route to go but either one's a masterpiece

If you liked his breakdown this episode I really recommend reading chapter 107 of the manga. I’ll spare you the details but a lot after Matsuda starts blasting is different, and the manga version of events are even more pathetic on Lights part lol
