Oh, DanDaDan, we thought you'd be better than all that.
We've shot Ep 2 and we dig the hell out of it, but we have a long conversation about how to do go fan-service, it's ramifications, and why this show fails as such and unfortunately so, as with so many other indicators, should have a better head on it's shoulders.
Yeah yeah yeah, you can say "....welp Anime gon' Anime." But we basically reject that as a stance and even if a show we REALLY ENJOY THUS FAR has a scene like that, we're gonna pick it apart.
Anyways, A LOT to love about this episode and we're stoked to continue!

I think anime has a huge problem with underage people and being...how do I say this...inappropriate with them. I've seen it more addressed this past year than ever before. Even Mr. Beast got caught up in some of the allegations of that nature. I won't say what. It's a really touchy subject. And it's one that has just been accepted in anime for decades. Overall I will give this show a couple more shots but right now it's giving me "You're now a list for watching this" vibes. Cowboy Bebop was a little pervy but Faye was like really really old technically lol.

When i watched the early release of this in cinema it really shocked me as i didnt expect it and i had to leave to take a breather honestly. I did go bsck in to watch it but it did really put me off. Fun show and premise otherwise but unfortunately with the shonen genre they love to insert crap like this and brush it off which is why as i got older i started getting less and less into it

2024-11-08 14:27:03 +0000 UTCSomething to keep in mind is that, while they still rip her clothes off in the manga they don't spend nearly as much time inspecting all the different angles of her body in it. Like when she gains her powers it doesn't focus on her stomach and panties at all. I think for the animation they need to find ways to fill the space between frames and they don't always know what to do. Another thing I heard was that the author was having difficulty in getting a shounen with a girl mc accepted, so maybe some concessions were made to make it more marketable.

What a pervert! Anyway here’s the close up-shot of that girl”. Also, Sean mirrored my thoughts on the scene with Turbo Granny: it works because it’s silly and we don’t see her like unzipping his pants and stuff, but the scene with the aliens feels too real with the guys forcing her legs open and ripping her clothes off. Fan service is such a weird concept. At best it’s jarring and at worst it actively detracts from what the anime is trying to do. I wonder how much of it is the author just being a perv and how much is them trying to appeal to the anime meta or whatever? Not an excuse of course but I could easily imagine editors demanding more tiddies for the readers n such, especially since it’s disproportionately prevalent in the first episode of shows

It felt so oddly aggressive compared to the rest of the show that it halted the 'fun-weird-zany' vibes that the earlier scenes built up. The way the character was restrained and clothed would probably/maybe be okay on its own (aliens take off clothes to operate/experiment on people or whatever, I can buy that), but having that mixed with the mind-control and forceful grabbing just killed the vibes. It just felt super unnecessary and didn't add anything to the character.

2024-11-08 02:00:07 +0000 UTCThere’s a lot of manga that have a great premise but I can’t read/watch because of this kinda shit I like the idea of a boy and girl each facing unique sexual trauma and overcoming it together to grow up. If something like that was handled with nuance and discretion and maturity it could be very moving, feel like there’s even a world where you could include some of the alien and ghost stuff. Just don’t wanna see children forcibly stripped and sexualised… plz listen Japan 🥲

2024-11-08 01:59:38 +0000 UTCFYI this isn't a "Netflix Anime" (as in, Netflix is a distributor but wasn't involved in the production) it's also being streamed on Crunchyroll and Hulu so it makes more sense that its being released week-to-week instead of all at once.

I actually stopped reading it originally because of this first chapter and then i was told that stuff goes away so eventually continued to read and was happy i did. Its such a good manga and it seems like he didn't make that mistake again.

2024-11-08 00:44:38 +0000 UTCYea I agree, I see the shows intent to like draw the analogy with the ex-boyfriend and have her beat those rapist aliens as a stand in for the rapey attitudes of the guy etc. But I can't say they handled it well, it feels like an unneccessary scene that adds nothing but some shots of a kids breasts for the most part which I can't say I'm a fan of. I do think the show and manga are better than that scene generally and that was an early "mistake" where the mangaka was trying stuff out and getting it wrong. So in the long run I don't hold it against it but it is unfortunate that we have to start off on this.

The current arc we are on in the present they have their clothes off 🙄 Also guarantee this season has clothes coming off again if im remembering correctly from the manga
