Coin toss
Added 2024-10-12 08:12:00 +0000 UTCJake and Shorty had been best friends for as long as either could remember, their bond solidified by years of shared pranks, adventures, and their unspoken rivalry. For most of that time, Shorty had been just "one of the guys"—always up for a mud fight, skateboard races, or sneaking into movies. But recently, something had shifted. Shorty, the wild-haired tomboy, was blooming into something else entirely—a girlie girl, complete with sparkly makeup, fashion-forward outfits, and an obsession with shoes that left Jake baffled.
Their friendship, however, hadn’t changed a bit. If anything, the evolution of Shorty’s style had only deepened their playful rivalry. Today, their usual routine of one-upping each other had brought them to a familiar place: the toss of a coin. Whoever won got to decide the day’s crazy activity. Shorty had a gleam in her eye as the coin spun in the air, .
“Tails!” she called, and Jake knew in his gut that the coin would betray him.
Sure enough, it was tails.
With a triumphant smirk, Shorty placed her hands on her hips and said, “Alright, Jakey-boy. Today’s your lucky day. I’m going to pamper you.”
Jake groaned, but there was no denying the rules. “Pamper me? What do you mean?” he asked, already dreading the answer.
“Oh, you know... A little makeover, a touch of glam. Starting with some lingerie,” she said with a wicked grin.
Jake turned beet red. “Yeah, no. Hard pass.”
Shorty laughed, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Fine, fine. Baby steps. Let’s start with something easier. How about... nails?”
Jake hesitated, glancing at her perfectly manicured hands. He was about to protest when Shorty grabbed his arm, pulling him toward her dressing table .
“Come on, it’s just nails! You can handle that, right?” she teased, raising one eyebrow.
Jake sighed, but there was something about the playful twinkle in her eye that made it impossible to say no. “Fine,” he muttered. “But just the nails.”
“Deal!” she smiled, already pulling out a huge platic box full of multicoloured false nails. She let you pick out of the sets and you chose black of course!
. As she carefully applied the first one, Jake felt oddly relaxed. Her fingers were gentle, and the closeness between them felt... different. He’d never really noticed how delicate her touch was before, or how she smelled faintly of vanilla and something sweet.
“You know,” Jake said, trying to lighten the mood, “I think I’m going to win next time, and when I do, you’re going to have to eat an entire pizza by yourself.”
Shorty giggled, her eyes flicking up to meet his. “Oh, please. You think that’s a punishment? Try harder, Jake.”
They kept up their usual banter as she applied nail after nail, but Jake found his mind wandering. He couldn’t help but notice how much Shorty had changed. Sure, she was still the same girl who’d once beaten him in every skateboard race, but now there was something softer, more feminine about her. Her hair, usually pulled back in a ponytail, now flowed freely over her shoulders. She wore makeup now nothing too much, but enough to make her blue grey eyes pop in a way that was hard to ignore.
“There! Done,” Shorty announced, sitting back to admire her handiwork. “Now look at those!” She held up Jake’s hands, showing off the dark black claws.
Jake wiggled his fingers, feeling ridiculous, but at the same time, oddly... content. He’d never admit it, but the personal attention felt kind of nice. And Shorty seemed genuinely proud of her work.
“Okay, you got me. They’re... not terrible,” Jake admitted with a crooked grin.
Shorty gave him a mock gasp. “Not terrible? Jakey, they’re fabulous. You should be thanking me for making you look this good.”
Jake rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide his smile. “Alright, alright. Thanks, Shorty. You win this round.”
She leaned in, eyes sparkling mischievously. “Oh, I’m not done yet. This is just the beginning. Next, we’re doing a full makeover! lipstick, eyeshadow, maybe even something cute to wear?”
Jake laughed, pulling his hands away. “Now you’re pushing it!”
But as their laughter finnaly subsided, Jake found himself thinking about Shorty in a way he hadn’t before. The teasing, the pranks, the rivalry—it had always been part of their dynamic. But now, he was noticing more than just the fun. He was noticing how pretty her smile was, how her laughter made his heart race, how her hand resting on his arm felt... different.
Maybe it was the nails, or maybe it was the way she looked at him when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. But Jake couldn’t help but wonder if this girl—the one who’d once been his tomboyish sidekick might just be becoming something more than a friend.
As Shorty packed up her nail kit and Jake flexed his new black tallons , she shot him a grin. “Next time, Jakey, you’re picking the lingerie. No excuses.”
Jake blushed again, but this time, the thought didn’t seem quite as embarrassing. Maybe... just maybe, he’d actually let her win the next coin toss.
