My throat went dry, and my pulse quickened. June's smirk lingered, her sharp eyes locked onto mine as if she had just uncovered my deepest secret.

I forced a chuckle, trying to play it cool. "Uh, what do you mean?"

June leaned back in her wheelchair, stretching her arms over her head. "Oh, come on," she said, her voice dripping with amusement. "I've seen the way you look at me. Or rather, at these." She gave her lifeless legs a little nudge with her hand, and I couldn't help but follow the motion, watching as they remained limp, unmoving.

My heart pounded. Was I that obvious? Had I slipped up?

She tilted her head, waiting for a reaction. When I didn't say anything, she laughed softly. "Relax, I don’t mind. In fact..." She trailed off, drumming her fingers against the wheel of her chair. "I’m just curious. What is it that you like so much?"

The question sent a rush of heat to my face. I swallowed hard. Was she teasing me, or did she really want to know?

I had two choices—laugh it off and change the subject or be honest and see where this led.
