Shelby’s story begins in motion. From a young age, she thrived on speed, strength, and precision—qualities that carried her into the world of elite athletics. By university, she was a Division 1 track athlete, sprinting and competing in the long jump with a drive that left her competitors in her wake. She wasn’t just chasing medals; she was on the path to greatness, with real offers to represent Team USA at the Olympics. Off the track, she balanced the demanding life of a cheerleader on her university’s football team, embodying energy, grace, and discipline. Ice skating, while never pursued professionally, was another passion she carried with her—a reminder of the joy she found in movement.
But at just 20 years old, Shelby’s life took a turn. Cancer struck, and with it came the loss of her left leg above the knee and her beautiful long Black hair. The diagnosis didn’t just take part of her body—it crushed her dreams of becoming a professional athlete and competing for Team USA. Yet Shelby refused to surrender her spirit. Though her body changed, her resilience only grew sharper, carving out a new identity forged in strength, endurance, and the refusal to be reduced by adversity. Instead of letting the illness define her, she found a new path forward, channeling her passion into coaching. She became a track coach for Team USA, pouring her knowledge, discipline, and love of the sport into the next generation of athletes, finding happiness in watching others achieve the dreams she once chased.
Life also brought love and family. At 29, she married her beautiful wife, Julia, and at 31, the couple adopted their daughter, a little girl who became the heart of their world. Together, they built a life full of laughter, devotion, and resilience.
Then, at 33, another battle emerged: ALS. Now 35, Shelby lives in a powered wheelchair, no longer able to walk, move, or speak. She communicates through an iPad with her eyes, her words slow but still sharp, filled with the same wit, wisdom, and passion that have always defined her. And though ALS forced her to step away from coaching, it has not dimmed her spirit. Where others might see tragedy, Shelby insists on showing love, resilience, and the fierce will to live fully in every way she can.
