Veredel did her best to stay calm, the worst thing she could do right now was panic and give the strange man sitting at her dinning room table a reason to do something crazy. He was finely dressed, with hair as dark as his jacket. He gestured to her, his voice calm, “Please, sit. You will find that you will want to hear what I have to say.”
She slowly sat down. “Like a reason why I should try and get those officers that were just here to come back?”
“I don’t think they are going to be coming back, they have to much to deal with at the moment for something as trivial as this.”
She tried to keep her voice level. “You broke into my home.”
“Is that really the thing bothering you?”
She just stared at him in silence. He seemed to be waiting for her response. What in the world is he talking about? Of course I am ticked he snuck in my house. But how is it I didn’t notice him, he should have given me a headache before I even walked into the room.
After a while the man became inpatient. “I would think by now you would be wondering why is it you can’t read my mind Ms. Stanwhick.”
Her jaw dropped. How was he supposed to know that? Now she was scared. This man clearly knew who she was and secrets that she herself had just found out earlier today. How did he know so much about her? She was almost afraid something bad was going to happen if she asked. But if I don’t, I might pass the one opportunity to figure out what is happening to me. “How do you know that?”
He smiled at her. “It is a very long and complicated story that I am sure you will enjoy hearing later.”
“Okkka. Who are you and what do you want?”
“My name is Trenton. I am a representative of a group that is looking for a solution to our, ahem, current cries.”
“You’re talking about the issue with Call of Caldiria?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
Veredel furrowed her brow. “That doesn’t explain what your doing here. Why aren’t you helping the police or something?” She actually wished she could read Trenton’s mind right now. She hated not knowing who the hell he was or what exactly he wanted.
He looked her straight in the eyes. “I am here to ask you to help me. You do want to find your brother yes?”
Veredel bit her tongue to keep quiet. This man, Trenton, knew way too much about her. She felt like her privacy was violated. How long had he been watching her? “How do you know about my brother?”
“My organization has ways of figuring out who was affected by the game’s, eh, malfunction.”
“You’re organization? Who are they and why are they…”
He held up his hand. “I can’t answer all your questions right now Veredel. If you want to learn about my origination, then you have to agree to help me. I can promise you we can get your brother back. I can also help you learn about yourself, help you control your abilities.”
Veredel didn’t know what to do. She knew she shouldn’t trust any strange man who broke into her home. But she was scared, not of the situation, but for her brother, and of what she was becoming. This man was offering up everything she wanted on a silver platter. There had to be more to it than that. He had said something about me helping him.
“You said I would have to do something for you.”
“Agree to actually help me first and I will tell you. I will give you only a few minutes more to think this over. You can always slip into the life of a drug addict to try and treat your new psionic abilities. I am sure the drugs will keep working for you.”
She didn’t like the tone in his voice. She suddenly doubted if her prescriptions would keep the pain in her mind back. Why am I letting him get in my head? I should have just called the police from the start. She still didn’t move. She was wrought with indecision. Either path she chose she was afraid she was wreck her life for years to come. She could see Trenton was becoming impatient she had to make her decision. Veredel felt sweat forming on the back of her neck.
Finally she blurted out. “I will help you. Just make sure you keep your promise and help me find Sean.”
Trenton smiled, becoming more relaxed. “You made the right decision.” She wasn’t fully sure yet, but she would do anything to save Sean.
Trenton handed her a small metal device half the size of a penny. “Put it behind your ear and you won’t need to worry about your psionic abilities.”
“Psionic?”
‘How you read people’s minds.”
She stared at the device. “How am I supposed to know this thing even works?”
Trenton reached behind his own ear and soon mind numbing pain filled her head. She could finally hear his thoughts. “I have been wearing one the whole time. Believe me now.”
She did, and quickly placed the device behind her ear in response to his question. She was ready for the pain to stop. The device attached itself to her skin and she felt something dig though her flesh. It was painful for a moment, but after a few seconds the pain was gone, and she could no longer any thoughts but her own.
“How…”
“I am sure you have many more questions but this isn’t the time or place for them. I have other business I need to attend to.” He handed her a small piece of paper. “This is my number. I will be contacting you in a few days when I have news on how we can be, beneficial to each other. Until then stay out of trouble.”
She wanted to know more, but Trenton had already left the room. When she rushed to find him he had vanished. She looked at the card. It read, Pulsar incorporated with a phone number on it. She wished that she had been given more time to ask questions before he had vanished on her.
Now what am I supposed to do. Wait for this mystery call what my father is stuck in the hospital? I don’t have time for that. I need to find a way to locate Sean on my own. And if Trenton does help me in the mean then all the better.
