Linda ran her hands through her dark hair as her heart pounded out of her chest. “This is a nightmare. An utter nightmare.” Her foot smashed a bicycle, and she slammed her hands on her skin-tight leggings. “Where did that thing come from?”
She heard the sound of a young girl crying. “Mommy. The giant lady stepped on my bike.”
Linda took a few steps back and waved her hands. “Umm, I am sorry.” She winced as she grew another few inches. “I can pay you back.”
The girl’s mother took her daughter by the hand. “Come on, honey. We need to go.” She looked up at Linda’s big amber eyes. “Don’t’ stare and just move.”
Linda bent over and peeled the bike off the bottom of her torn shoe. “I am really sorry.” The young lady hurried her kid off down the street. “Well then.”
Linda sighed and turned around. She was on her way to the Glendale pharmacy to see if they had medication that would stop her from growing. Linda had a unique problem where her body endlessly grew. She had medicine for this, but the supply recently ran out, and now she had to find some other place to get her prescription before she was too massive to function.
Series filled her ears, and she turned her head. “Oh no. They caught up with me.” She gulped as her shirt ripped. “And I am too big now to hide.”
She ran down the street just as the police cruiser came into view. Just a few minutes ago, the same vehicle had pulled her over as she had driven out of control on the highway, her body too big to control her car. The officers wanted to bring her in for a ticket, but she didn’t have time for nonsense like that. The last thing she wanted was to be locked up in a steel cage that would slowly tighten in on her until she popped it open.
Linda slid between a laundry mat and gas station and couched. “Hopefully, they didn’t see me.” She held her head in her hands as she grew another few inches and her back imprinted on the gas station wall. The police car sped right on by, and Linda let out a sigh of relief which caused the rips in her shirt to open up even more. “Ok, now to get to Glendale. And fast.” She grew another few inches, and she could hear her leggings begin to groan. “I don’t want to risk my clothing giving out.”
Linda stood up, now nine feet taller than the buildings around her. Granted, they were all one-story buildings, but still, she was gaining height fast. She walked back out in the middle of the street and scratched at her head. “I think at this point I am just going to have to run to Glendale. There is no way I am fitting back into a car.” She grew another few inches and her arms burst apart her sleeves. “I also think walking through the game preserve between here and Glendale would be a good idea.” She pulled at her tight shirt. “I don’t want anyone to see my clothing malfunction on the way there. Whoa!”
She fell flat on her face, and her hand smashed the nearby cars. “Ugh crap.” She shook her head and saw that her right foot had slipped into an open manhole. “Well, that is just great. Who would leave that open without warning anyone? Ugh.” She sat up and narrowed her eyes. “You have got to be kidding me. My foot is stuck.” She grew once more, and the hole tightened around her leg. She watched as her left foot burst through her shoe, and she could feel her other foot do the same below the surface of the ground.
“If I touch that sewer water. . .” She shivered. “I won’t let it happen.” Linda pressed against the ground with all her might, but nothing happened besides a few cracks in the pavement. “I can’t wait here.” She winced as she grew a bit more. “I need to get out of here now.”
Linda looked around for something to help her get her foot out. “Ugh, there is nothing on this street except for the cars I dented with my hands?” Linda blinked. “Oh no, no-no.” She looked at the small SUV as the idea formed in her head. “I can’t do it. I won’t.” She grew again, and she could feel water tickle her toes.
“Ugh, gross. I will do it.” She reached over and picked up the blue SUV. “I am so sorry.” Then, with the vehicle in hand, she hammered away at the pavement around the manhole in an attempt to free her cramped foot. “Let me out. Come on.”
Eventually, she chipped away enough of the street so she could slip her leg free. Linda jumped up and cheered. “Yes.” She dropped the SUV and danced; her body caused the nearby buildings to vibrate. “I did it. I am free.”
Her celebration was cut short as another growth spurt shattered her shirt, and she was left standing in the middle of the street with just her leggings and bra. She looked around, now twice the size of the buildings around her. “I need to get to Glendale fast.” She grew yet again. “Before anything else happens.”
Linda hurried down the street. Soon she came to the edge of town. “Ok, do I follow the freeway to Glendale?” She scratched her chin as she swelled again. “Or do I cut through the forest?” She pulled at her leggings. “It will take longer to go through the woods, but I think it will be safer. I won’t have to worry about stepping on anyone, or if any more of my clothes rip, no one will know until I get to the next town.” She grew yet again; this time, she heard a rip from her pants. “I will take the freeway. I need that medicine as soon as possible.”
Linda rushed down the road with a careful eye where she stepped. The last thing she wanted was another car under her massive foot. Linda would never be able to live with herself if she crushed someone. Still, she didn’t have to try too hard as there were not that many people on the freeway and the few vehicles that were swerved to avoid her giant feet.
A few minutes later, she could edge of Glendale appear in the distance. “Almost there.” Shrrrip. A massive tear appeared on her right pant leg as she grew yet again. “And just in time.” Linda hurried her pace as she ran towards the small town.
The small roads were too narrow for her to fit her feet into. “You have got to be kidding me.” Linda clenched her hands into fists and slammed them on the side of her body. “I am not that big. Why did they have to make this town so tiny?” She gasped as she noticed multiple people running away from her. “Oh crap. I am sorry. I didn’t mean to yell.”
Linda shook her head as she tried her think. “Ok, what to do.” Her body grew once more and the rip in her pants expanded. “I need to get to the center of town and the pharmacy without destroying anything or hurting anyone. But how? A few more minutes, and this town will be just a doll set.”
She gently pressed down on one of the buildings next to her. “Hmm, maybe I could. . .” She shook her head. “No. It is too risky.” She grew again, and the tear in her leggings stretched from her thigh to her ankle. “Screw it, I don’t have a choice. These things will just have to support my weight.”
Linda got down onto her knees and began to crawl across the roofs of the buildings. “I am sorry. So sorry.” She gulped as the buildings below her groaned below her limbs. “Please don’t give out.”
She could see the pharmacy just ahead. “Ok. Almost there.” Just as she reached her destination, another grow support rocked her body, and the strip mall below her body gave out. “Crap.” A dust cloud of debris flew into Linda’s face, and she held her hand to cover her mouth as she coughed. “Oh no.” She quickly raised her legs. “Please tell me I didn’t smush anyone. Hello?”
Linda could see a few people trapped under the rubble. “Oh no. I am so sorry.” Despite their thrashing, she gently picked them up and set them down a block over. “I will pay you back something, I promise.”
She then turned her attention back towards the pharmacy. “Ok.” She lowered her head and used her finger to knock on the glass door. “Hello? Anyone home? I am having a growing issue and need medicine stat.”
A tiny bald man in a white coat rushed to the door and flipped the neon sign to closed. Linda grabbed the building and shook it. “Hey, I saw that.” The man inside ducked under a table. “I need help. Please, I will pay whatever you want; just check if you have Microeferien. Please, this is important.” Her body swelled once more, and her leggings burst apart. She took a deep breath as she pulled at her tight underwear. “And hurry.”
The pharmacist slowly walked to the door and opened it. “Look, lady. I don’t know what I can do to help you. Please just go before you crush my store. I don’t want to have to relocate.”
“I just need some Microeferien. Please.”
He put his hands over his ears. “Ok. Just don’t say anything more.” He shook his head. “You talk louder than my truck's car alarm. Sheesh.”
Linda sighed and lowered her head so she could see inside the shop. She watched as the pharmacist moved about inside the building. A few moments later, he came to the front of the store.
“I have good news and bad news.”
Linda smiled. “What is the good news?”
“We have the medication in stock.”
“And the bad news?”
He held out his hand. “We only have a few pills. Not too many people take this medication. And from what I can tell, this isn’t enough here to umm,” He narrowed his eyes at the pill container, “reverse the growth process. It will only stop it. So if you want to shrink back down, you need a bigger dose which I can’t offer.”
Linda sighed. “Ok. Where can I find more of the medication?”
“I don’t know. This isn’t exactly something people are prescribed very often.” He scratched at his chin. “I can order some for you if you really need some. It will take a few weeks, though.”
She slammed her hand down. “I can’t wait that long.” He hid down behind the counter. “Oh no. I am sorry. I didn’t mean to lose my temper.”
She squinted as she grew another few feet. “It is just this has been a stressful twenty-four hours. Look, can you tell me where I can go to find the pills immediately?”
The pharmacist came out from behind the register. “Maybe at the other end of the state? That is where the distribution is. You might be able to get the pills at the source if you are that desperate.”
“Thank you.” She smiled. “Can I still have the pills for now? So the growth won’t get any worse.” She shook her head. “The last thing I want is to be over a hundred feet tall.”
“Wait, you are not that big now?” Linda narrowed her eyes at him. “Sorry, sorry.” He picked up the prescription bottle and walked to the door. “Here. I hope this helps. Now please leave my store in peace.”
She let him drop the bottle onto her finger. After he backed away, she threw it into her mouth. A sigh of relief washed over her. “Phew. I am not growing out of control for the time being.” She looked down at the pharmacy. “Hey, how long will this last?” She saw the grates to the store were now up. “Well then.” Linda stood up and dusted herself off. “At least I have some time to get to the distribution center and try and stop this nonsense before it gets any worse.”
