Christen sighed as she locked up the door to Diner Dash. Unfortunately she had to stay over to close up the shop as Paxton found out that a customer had swollen up into a blueberry and she was linked to it in some way. “Thanks for sticking up for me Pam.”
The whole incident had brought a rush of business and news attention to Diner Dash though. Everyone wanted to see Ellen the human blueberry. The poor woman had swollen so much that she was as big as the building by the time they found a tow truck to haul her way. The paramedics were baffled by Ellen’s situation but also said she was the third human blueberry they found this week.
Christen rubbed her stomach as she walked over to her car. The blue color on her hand had vanished but she now had chest pain, horrible itching sensations and a growing urge to eat blueberries. She tried to ignore these sensations but they were steadily becoming worse. As she sat down in her car her body felt sluggish, almost as if something was missing inside her.
“I must be going crazy. I feel like I need blueberries now.” Christen shook her head as she started her car. “But I can’t. I might swell up again. Augh.” She felt a sharp pain in her stomach. “But if I don’t I feel like I am going to wither up.” She pulled out of the parking lot. “There is a grocery store a few miles from here that should still be open. I hope I can make it there in time.”
As she drove her body began to feel very weird. Lines appeared on her hands as a constricting feeling spread through her body. “I feel like I am withering.” She took deep breaths in as the grocery store came into view. “Just keep it together Christen. You are ok.” She took in another deep breath as her hands began to shrivel. “Almost there. I will just have a few blueberries. I don’t want to swell again, but I can’t keep withering away.”
Christen stepped out of her vehicle and didn’t bother to lock it. Instead she rushed for the sliding glass door as her right arm wilted. She tried to use her right arm to open the door to the store but it was too hard to move so she used her left arm instead. “My body is constricting. If I don’t get any blueberries soon. . .” She shook her head. “No I don’t’ want to think about that.”
Christen rushed into the store and ignored the strange looks that the other people gave her. She needed to find the produce isle, rushing past the greeter. After making her way through a few isles she found the sea of produce she was looking for. She rushed into it, looking from one stand to the next. The scent of blueberries filled her nostrils causing her body to twitch.
That smell. It is so overwhelming.
Christen searched and searched but couldn’t find the blueberries. “I know there are here.” Her left hand began to cramp up. “I need them before I wilt way.” She spotted a young lady setting some bananas on a produce stand and slowly walked over. “Umm can you help me find some blueberries?”
The young lady turned to face Christen as she moved her reddish hair from her face. “We have it in back still. You will have to wait until I bring it out.”
Christen formed her hand into a fist. I can’t wait that long. I can’t take these cramps. Christen backed away and looked for a doorway into the back of the store. She spotted it at the far end of the produce section. Ok walk slowly, don’t let anyone know what you are doing. Just sneak in, get some blueberries and get out. She sighed. I just need to remember not to take too many. I don’t’ know what these blueberries might do to me.
Christen looked around as she approached the employees only door to make sure no one was looking. Once she was satisfied that no one would see her she dashed inside. On the other side she could see boxes and boxes of produce and other valuables. The scent of the blueberries was so strong now that she could almost taste them on her tongue. She looked around, licking her lips when she spotted five massive crates of blueberries in the corner. “Bingo.” She rushed over and tried to reach her left arm in but it had become too withered. “Ugh I can’t move either of my arms.” She flung her arms around. “What am I going to do?”
She looked at the nearest crate as she licked her lips, bent over and dug her head in. The blueberries tasted like heaven. Each bite she felt feeling come back into her arms and her joints loosen. Soon she felt her arms return back to their original form and she could move them like normal. Christen stood up, wiping blueberry juice from her chin. “I feel so much better now.” She looked at her skin but didn’t see any change in color. “Well that is good. I think now is a good time to stop.”
As she walked away her body began to bubble. Christen put a hand on her belly. “Oh god what is happening now?” She watched as her palm turned a dark shade of blue. “Juice? From those few blueberries?” She looked around. “I need to get out of here.” Christen stuffed her hands into her pockets as she rushed for the doors.
She walked back into the main store without much incident but then a young man said, “Umm are you ok miss? Your face is blue.”
Christen waved him off. “I am fine.” Her arm felt heavy as she felt a building pressure in her hands. “Look I have to go. It was swell talking to you.”
The man scratched at his beard. “You too.”
Christen hurried her pace as her hands slowly filled with juice, the space between her fingers slowly vanishing. My hands feel like squishy weights. Why isn’t the juice spreading in any other part of my body?
She was almost out of the store when the young lady who had been setting the bananas down stepped in front of her. “Hey where do you think you are going?”
Christen hid her puffy hands behind her back. “What?”
“I saw you run into the back room and then you came out all blue. What did you do?”
Christen felt her arms begin to enlarge. I don’t have time for this. If I stay here I will swell up in the store. I can’t be cramped up as I swell. I need to be out in the open, to be in the sun and fresh air. Christen blinked. Why did I think of that? What is wrong with me?
