Rachel tugged at her wrist behind her back. “I have never been to one of these things, Jane. Are you sure they are fun?”
“You have never been to a party?”
Rachel blushed. “No. Of course, I have been to a party before.” She slid her tan hands into her jean pocket, her nails scratching at the holes in the fabric. “I mean the adult parties you are always going to. Where people drink and. . .”
Jane laughed as they turned the corner in the apartment complex. “Oh, you sweet summer child.” She slid her arm around Rachel. “You are nervous you might meet someone and have a good time tonight. Is that it?”
“I ugh. . .”
“Well, trust me. Someone like you will meet the love of your life.” Jane giggled. “It is almost guaranteed.”
“What?”
Jane tapped on the small vial in her pocket. “Oh, it’s nothing. Just focus on having a good time and mingling. You will do fine. Just fine.” She closed her hazel eyes and smiled. As Jane opened her eyes once more, loud thumping music filled the air, and pounding neon lights shot out of a doorway at the far end of the corridor. “Ahh, there we are.” Jane smiled. “Room fifty-one. Here we are.”
Rachel gulped as she watched Jane vanish into the pulsating lights. “Ok, you can do this. Ahhhhuh.” Blinking her blue eyes, she delved into the unknown.
Loud music greeted her on the other side, along with dozens upon dozens of other people dancing. Before Rachel could get her barring’s, a young man with short sandy hair took her by the hands and swept her onto the dance floor. “Oh my.”
“Hey there.” She smiled. “Haven’t seen you yet. Did you just arrive?”
She blushed as she looked into his dark face. “Umm, yes. I think. . .”
“The names Bruce. And if you don’t mind, I like to cut right to the chase.” He smiled. “Can you play pool?”
Rachel blinked. “Ya, I guess.”
“Perfect. We are hosting a bit of a tourney tonight here for cash and. . .” He laughed. “I am pulling your leg. You should see the look on your face.” He slammed his hand on her shoulder. “I just wanted to say you were cute without sounding like a jerk ok.”
“Oh. I well. . .”
“Hey, Bruce.” Another guy who seemed to have misplaced his shirt walked up to them.
“You are needed in the other room.” He looked over at Rachel. “Sup.” She smiled and waved.
Bruce rolled his eyes and moaned. “What did they do this time?”
“How does throwing a dart into the television sound.”
“What the fuck?” He smiled at Rachel. “I will be right back. Don’t you go anywhere.” Bruce rushed off with the shirtless man into the crowd of sweaty people.
As Rachel sighed to herself, Jane moved over to the punch bowl. “Well, it’s time to spice this party up.” She pulled out the small vial from her pocket. “I need to make sure Rachel finds someone one way or another.” She poured the strange contents of the vial into the punch. “Tonight, is going to be a night to remember.” She giggled.
As Rachel walked over, Jane threw the strange vial behind the snack counter. “So, are you enjoying yourself? I did see you talking to a strapping and cute man already.”
Rachel shrugged. “I don’t know. He seemed interested, but other things had his attention. Though my guess is he is hitting on any young woman who comes through those doors.” She sighed and sat down. “I don’t know. I don’t think I am going to meet anyone here. I feel like I’m just going to be lost in the crowd.”
“Oh, hush. You are not going to be lost in the crowd.” Jane poured out a cup of punch for Rachel. “Now have some of this and try and relax. We came here to have fun.”
“You are not trying to get me drunk, are you?”
Jane held her hand over her chest. “I swear I would never do that. On my mother’s grave.”
“But your mother is as healthy as a horse.”
Jane forced the cup into Rachel’s hand. “Just try it, ok. You need to relax and unwind a bit. We came here for fun, not second-guessing ourselves. It’s a party, after all.” Jane stood up. “Now enjoy yourself.”
