Alicila walked along the dirt path towards the edge of town. "Hugh, I hope I don't have to help out with any more of Nora's schemes until she can help me figure out how to return to my original size." Shook her head. "Or at least help me figure out what happened to my mother. I don't want to spend another minute dealing with giant blueberries that they have created."
"Hey!" Ventor waved as she approached. "There you are. Took your sweet time."
Alicila raised an eyebrow. "Well, someone had to help get the rest of the townsfolk back to Terrondale." She groaned.
"Why can't they make protective clothing or something. Seriously if they are making this into a weapon, you would think they would learn how to, I don't know, not get themselves infected." She slumped down on the ground next to Ventor. "Ugh, I am exhausted and no closer to learning about my mother or how to control this curse I have."
"Your mother? You never spoke of your family before."
She glanced at him sharply. "Yes, I have a mother. And I miss her, ok."
"Sorry."
Alicila sighed. "I am sorry. I am just grumpy after having to roll all of those people back to town. I don't want to do that again on just promises." She looked up at the sky. "I really hope they keep their word."
"Hey, I will if they won't." He looked at the ground. "I know that my word doesn't exactly mean much, I guess, and me asking for help right now isn't the best thing." She glanced down at him. "But my sister needs help and the town well. . . they would kill her if they knew she was a drider."
"I still don't get what is so bad about that? They took me in as a Sizeran."
He sighed. "When we were kids, we lost our parents too were driders. They were creatures that couldn't be reasoned with and destroyed the town. And in the chaos, I was separated from my sister and wound up here. I didn't see her again until recently and her umm unexpected changes." He shook his head. "She is trying to control things, but we need to keep her way from people who might hurt her." He fell onto Alicila's leg. "Please, I don't know who else to turn to in this crappy town. You have to help me."
Alicila patted him on the back. "Don't worry, I can do what I can. I just don't know what that is yet. As long as you still try and help me."
"Of course. Of course." He took a deep breath. "Now come on.
My house is not far from here, and it will be midnight soon. We have to get to my sister before then." He jumped to his feet. "Hurry."
Alicila followed him, only having to walk to keep up. "What exactly did you do to make the town upset with you?"
Ventor shrugged. "I don't know. It wasn't exactly one thing. Knocking Nora into a vat of her blueberry mixture. Messing up their negotiations with other towns. Just general screw-ups." He sighed. "They think of me as an ominous cloud over the town. I have had some of them threatening me to get out of here."
"Oh."
"Well, jokes on them because I am not going anywhere.
No matter how many times that they try and trick me into eating their new berry concoctions. Nope." He laughed painfully. "Huh."
Ventor looked up. "Look, here is my house."
Alicila stood where she was as he rushed forward. Wow, the town really seems to despise him. She sighed. I can't believe he has stayed here all this time.
Ventor stood in the open doorway. "Hey, are you coming?"
She crossed her arms. "What do you expect? I am almost thirty feet tall. I am not getting into your house."
"Then just bend down in front of the door." He turned around. "Hey, Trishia, come here. It's Ventor."
A shrill-looking woman came into the living room.
"Ven?" She hugged herself. "What are you doing here so late. I need that door locked. You know what is about to happen."
"I can't just abandon you. You know that."
She shook her head. "This is my battle that I have to fight alone. I said that before."
"And yet you came here for help."
She turned away. "I came here because the Lulvix Empire is spreading across the land to the south, and I have nowhere else to go." She sighed. "I didn't want to come here. I had to."
She turned her head and noticed Alicia.
"Oh my goodness." She jumped behind the wooden and straw chair. "What is that?"
"It is my friend Alicila. The only person in the entire town who is going to help us."
"She is a Sizeran. Why would she help us? They are monsters."
Alicila narrowed her eyes. "Excuse me. I am not a monster. I am just a normal person trying to live my life."
Ventor sighed. "She is right, Trishia. Alicila is a kind-hearted person who is well a better person than me." He looked at the ground. "I honestly don't know why you or anyone else puts up with me."
Alicila slammed her hand against the side of the house.
"Hey, in there. We are running out of time here. This isn't the time for self-doubt."
Trishia grabbed her brother by the shoulders. "You giant friend is right. Snap out of it before I change."
Ventor nodded his head. "Right." He grabbed his sister's shoulders. "Look, I am not going to let you just drift off and be taken by this monster."
She shook her head. "I told you last night I am not strong enough. Just lock me away so I don't hurt anyone."
Alicila raised an eyebrow. "What is she talking about, Ventor?"
He turned towards Alicia. "My sister can try and overcome her drider side if she tries.
That is why I asked you to be here.
I want you to help her stay sane tonight. I know she can do it."
"What?"
Trishia pounded on her brother's shoulders. "Please just lock me away, so I don't hurt anyone."
She grasped at her sides. "Ugh, I don't feel good anymore. Do it quickly before it's too late."
He took his sisters' hands. "No. I know you can pull through this, Trishia. Then this nightmare won't hang over you for the rest of your life."
"No, I can't." She turned away. "I won't endanger you. I am sorry, Ventor." She fled into the next room.
"Trishia!" Ventor slammed his fist on the side of the table. "Alicila, I need your help now. He hurried after his sister. "Before it's too late."
Alicila made her way to her feet and pulled at her hair.
"Ugh, what am I supposed to do? I thought I was just going to watch the house."
She groaned. "This is turning into a bit of a nightmare."
