"Hey!" Samantha rushed up to Alicila as she exited the police station. "I have been looking everywhere for you." She put her arms on Alicila's shoulders. "Please tell me you are not hurt."
"Of course, I'm not." Samantha sighed. "Why would you think that?"
"Well, things are a bit weird right now. Look, let's head back home."
Alicila stood where she was. "And do what? You are out of a job, and I am still attending school." She rolled her eyes. "And I hate it to my core. But we need to think about what we will do to just get by roomy." She paced back and forth, her body growing and shrinking with each step. "I could try looking for a job again, but I just don't know. You know how I am under extreme pressure. I can't control my size."
Samantha giggled. "Like right now?"
Alicila looked at the ground and noticed she was three feet taller than before. "Ugh, see."
She shrank down to her normal five feet and six inches in height. "I am already flustered."
"We will figure something out. Don't worry." She took Alicila's hands in her scaly fingers. "And you don't need to worry about getting a job. Instead, focus on your university work. It takes up enough time and stress in your life." She winked. "I can find another job, and we have enough money to get by in the meantime."
"But. . ." Alicila shrank a few inches. "I can help!"
"And you have important mid-terms at that university as well? Don't you remember that?"
Alicila groaned. "Ugh.
You are talking like you are my mother right now."
Samantha turned around. "No, just a very concerned friend. I know how much you let your stress affect you." Alicila followed her. "And well, I don't want to wake up in the middle of the night again with your foot in my bedroom."
"Hey, that was. . ." Alicila looked at the broken pavement below. "Ok, that happens quite often, but hey, I try my best not to well get stressed." She sighed.
"It's a work in progress."
"Hey, stress is a part of life. It is how you deal with it that matters." Samantha patted Alicila on the back. "And right now, you have a tendency to change rapidly in size due to stress, so I am not willing to put any extra on you."
"But we are in an extreme situation." She walked in front of her friend. "I will go along with this for now, but you have to promise me something."
Samantha smiled. "Ok. But what is it."
"If you can't find a new job in three days, I get to help."
"Three days isn't that much time."
Alicila held her hand up and caused three of her fingers to double in size. "You have three days." Then, her fingers doubled in size again. "You hear me, three." She shoved her fingers in Samantha's face.
"Ok. You don't have to put your giant fingers in my face." Alicia shrank her hand down to normal. "I think I can live with this deal. It shouldn't be that hard to find a new job."
Alicila crossed her arms. "Well, I hope not. I don't want to be out on the street or anything."
Samantha pushed Alicila's shoulder. "You won't be out on the street. Don't worry."
They turned the bend and walked down their block.
"So what exactly do you want to do for the rest of the day then?" Alicila smiled. "I have the day off from university studies so we could go out on the town." She jumped onto the railing in front of their apartment building. "It will be fun. We haven't had a girls' night out in ages."
"We just had a long conversation about me finding a job, and you want to go out?" Samantha walked past her and towards the front door of the apartment complex.
"But why not?" Alicila jumped down. "What is one day or night of fun?"
She pushed the door open. "Look, we will go out and have a good time eventually, but now just isn't a good time." Samantha put her hand on Alicila's shoulder. "I'm sorry. If it wasn't for those jerks burning down that store, we could have had the best time tonight."
"But we can still have some fun."
She shook her head. "I need to make sure we have some food to eat." She sighed. "And you don't have to get a job yourself, so you don't start stress growing. I can handle the stress shrinking, but I can't handle you becoming a giantess from stress." She walked inside. "There is such a thing as too big to handle."
Alicila stayed where she was and looked at the ground.
"I barely get any time to have fun with her anymore." She kicked the door just as it was about to swing shut and walked inside. "What kind of ass holes would burn it down anyways?
And why would the police just laugh this off? It is absurd." She sighed.
"It feels like life is laughing at me trying to have an ounce of well fun sometimes. I just need to be bored and alone."
She put her hands in her pocket and felt the piece of paper that the creeps from before had slipped her. "Ugh, I almost forgot about this thing." She pulled it out of her jacket. "Those weirdos who were messing with the Dorien shopkeeper gave this to me." She narrowed her eyes. "To those who want their eyes opened about the plight upon our fair city, come to the burros near midnight. Bring a white flag with a single scar through the center, so we know you are here for the meeting and to have your eyes opened.
She sighed. "What in the world is this?" She sighed and looked at the wall filled with flyers reminding the building staff to pick up various odds and ends at different times of the week. "I don't know if it's a good idea to check this thing out, but the only other thing I have to do tonight is stare at my wall and sleep. I am caught up on work for the university, and now that Samantha has to job hunt again. . ." She sighed. "Well, I just don't know what to do." Alicila looked at the scrap of paper. "There is just something that doesn't feel right about this." She narrowed her eyes.
"Well, maybe I can go to figure out why they were acting the way they were earlier today." She nodded her head. "Ya. I have to get answers somehow. Besides, Samantha is telling me I should get out and meet people more often." She made her way over to the stairwell. "Ok, I will do it. I will go to this creepy little meeting tonight in the burrows. It is all the way on the other side of the city, but that shouldn't be a problem for me. I can just grow a bit and quickly make my way over there." She giggled as she walked up the stairwell. "I love being a Sizeran. Life is so easy sometimes."
Alicila hurried up to her apartment and flung open the door. Samantha then smiled as she lifted a massive pack onto her back. “Ahh you are finnaly back.” She tossed the keys to Alicila. "Watch over the apartment, will you? I am going to be out all night looking for a job."
"Wait, what?" Alicila walked into the center of the room. "Why all night?"
"I just think it will be safer if I get a nighttime job, that is all." She smiled.
"Please don't leave the apartment while I'm gone. I don't want anyone taking our stuff, and I'm counting on you to crush any wannabee intruders."
"But. . ."
"Have a good night, Alicila. Get some good study work in." She slammed the door.
Alicila sighed and slumped down into a nearby wooden chair. "Well, great.
What am I going to do now?" She looked at the floor. "I can't just sneak out of here. There have been five break in's on our floor just this week." She sighed. "But I can't just sit around here waiting to crush someone who tries to break in either." She swelled a foot. "Ugh, I can't take this pressure. "She stood up and grew another foot. "I need to make a decision, and I need to make it fast before I run out of room." She pulled at her hair as she grew another foot.
"Ughh." Alicila closed her eyes. "I will just head out to this stupid event and get back before Sammantha returns from her job hunt."
She took a deep breath just before her head brushed against the ceiling. "Yes, that is it. It will work out perfectly. I can go there, see what is going on, and no one will be the wiser. Ahh." She sat down and crushed the chair beneath her enlarged body. "Awww. I forgot to shrink myself down." She rubbed her hand across her face. "Samantha is going to kill me."
