Debby sighed as she watched the falling snow through the passanger window of the SUV. “I don’t see why we have to go.”
Kevin laughed. “It’s the holidays. And it’s family.”
Debby turned her head as she flaied her pale arms about. “Exactly. Why should we be spending Chrismas day with the family? Your brother and sister. . .” She winced. “Ugh I just can’t. . .”
“Well your mother is a handful don’t forget.”
Debby buried her head in her lap. “Don’t remind me.”
Kevin laughed as he patted her on the back. “It will be fine. We will go. Have some good food and be home in time for Chrismas day. We can limit our time with the family as much as possible. Don’t you worry.”
She sighed as she sat up. “I just wish we didn’t have to go at all. Who decides to have a family gathering on xmas eve? This is just absurd.” Debby slammed her hand on the dash. “Something is up I know it. Nori has something planned. My sister always does this!”
“Come on. We haven’t even arrived and you are already freaking out. Just relax. We won’t have to see them for another year after today. Besides I don’t think your sister has some master plan to ruin people’s holiday.” He smiled. “So let’s have some fun?”
Debby closed her blue eyes and forced a smile. “Ok. I will try to have some fun.” She bent over and kissed him on his cheek. “For you.” She giggled. “Maybe we could do what we did when we were twenty and sneak off in a closet and—
He laughed. “After the way my father recacted when they figured out what happened I don’t know if that is a good idea. Did you know he tried to burn the contents of the closet.” He laughed. “Oh god if they had found us that Chrismas you would have been kicked out so fast. It is a good thing we are married now.”
“Ya. Even though your parents still don’t like me.”
Kevin laughed. “Well it just made that moment all the sweeter.” He sighed. “The snow is really starting to come down.”
Debby pulled out her phone. “Hmm looks like there is a blizzard watch in the area.”
“Watch? It is starting to become white out conditions.” He shook his head. “It is a good thing we are almost to my parents. I don’t want to think about driving home in this mess.”
Debby groaned. “Ugh. Stupid weather. It better not strand us here. I don’t’ want to spend the holidays stuck with my crazy realitives. A few hours is bad enough.”
***
Kevin swerved into the driveway. “Fuck! Come on. Come on.” Slowly they skidded to a stop, inches away from Debby’s sister truck. “Phew.” He opend the door only to hit Nori’s vehicle and set off the car alarm. “Crap!”
A woman in a white coat with even whiter hair came rushing out. “Who the hell is trying to steal my vehicle.” She raised a bottle of pepper spray. “Come out where I can see you cowrd.”
As Debby walked up dowrds the house Kevin slipped out of the SUV. “It’s just us Nori.” Debby screamed in pain as her sister spraed her in the eyes.
“That doesn’t make me feel any better little sis. Especially because you hurt my baby.” She narrowed her eyes as Kevin appeared out of the blinding snow. “You! Learn to drive.” Nori snorted and rushed back inside shivering. “Can I get through one holiday gathering without someone trying to ruin it!”
Kevin walked up and hugged Debby as she rubbed her eyes. “How are you doing?”
She shook her head. “Besides my sister attacking me for no good reason just dandy. Hugh.” Debby blinked her eyes and walked towards the open doorway, focusing on the dim light. “Remind me to spike her drink.”
Kevin laughed as he closed the door behind them. “As funny as that would be we don’t need a war like last year. Just try and keep things civil will you.”
She kicked the snow off her shoes. “Only if Nori does. I am not putting up with another year of torment.” Debby sighed. “But you are right. I should try and keep things civil.” She threw her arm around her husband. “Now let’s try and get through tonight shall we?”
“Of course. The sooner we get through dinner the sooner we can head home.” He hung his coat green winter coat up on the wooden coat rack, covering up the half a dozen coats already hung up. Debby then slid her blue jacket off and hung her coat off only for all of the coats to fall to the floor.
“Crap!” Her eyes fell upon her father in law’s orange tabby cat. “If anyone ask’s Squeakers did it.” She took a few steps back and dashed into the kitchen. She had to slow herself to a halt as she almost fell onto her ass on the smooth porcilian floor. “Holy crap!”
Her mother walked fowrd, her baggy feathers in a frown. “Debby Pathrin. I raised you better then to talk like that!”
“Mother. I. . .”
“Look at you.” Her mother ran her withered fingers over Debby’s chest. “You are just so thin! Are you eating enough?”
“Pam!”
She suddenly slapped Debby. “I told you about calling me by that name. It is mother to you.” Debby rubbed the side of her cheek. “I don’t care if you are twenty nine or not. You will address me in the proper manner. Now stand up straight and tuck in that blouse.” Debby did as she was told. “Now go and get some food in you. Your husband is not going to love you if you are so deathly thin.” She tapped herself on her round belly. “See that. It shows I am heathy.” She slapped Debby on the back. “Now go put some meat on those bones. Go, go, go!”
As Debby rushed over to the dinning table she shook her head. “If I didn’t know better I would say she is tring to fatten me up.”
“Don’t take it to personally.” Kevin’s brother walked up and grabbed a brisket from the table. “She is telling everyone that.”
“Zach. How goes the craft store.”
He shrugged as he muched on the brisket, bites and pieces of bread flying out of his mouth. “Umm good I guess. Revune sales are down but I am hanging in there. The gym next to me shut it’s doors last week.”
“Ouch.”
“Ya. But the small business world is a nightmare. One day you are living your dream and the next you are wishing you were never born.” He sighed. “I am worried I will have to move in with my parents soon because money is getting so tight. I hope they let me come back in. You know with the whole at eighteen you are out thing.”
“Yikes. Hope everything works out.”
“I am hopeful.” He snached another brisket. “Anyways nice talking to you. I am going to go bug my father for his tablet. I have to check on my quaraly report.”
As Zach walked away Debby waved goodbye. “Nice talking to you. See you at dinner.” She sighed. “At least Kevin’s brother is a nice person.”
“Hey!” Debby turned around to see Nori with an outstretched hand. “I come with a peace offering.” Debby looked at the small piece of cancy in Nori’s hand. “Take it you will love it!”
“It isn’t poison is it?”
Nori laughed. “No of course not. I wouldn’t dare do such a thing.”
“One year you gave me food laxative so powerful I shit my pants. I didn’t even have time to make it to the rest room.”
“What can I say?” Nori shugged her shoulders. “I overdid the dose. What more do you want me to say?”
“Well I am still not going to trust you.”
Nori slid her hand around her sister’s shoulder. “It is a candy imported all the way from Eurupe. You know how good candy is over there?” She kissed the air. “You haven’t tasted sweets until you have tried their succelent food. It is like a rabbit hole of flavor. You will never be the same sis.”
“Ok now I know something is up. You are sweet talking me.”
Nori slid the blue and white piece of candy into her hand. “Just trust me. You wont’ be disipoinded.” She turned around. “Now I have to go and help mother with the ham. Todaloo.” She danced away.
Debby tapped her fingers on the tablecloth as she stared and the strange looking candy. It was heartshaped with a woman etched in the center. “What is this thing?” She held it up to the ceiling fan to see it was translucent. “They sure make weird pieces of candy over in Eurupe. It does look good though. But I can’t trust Nori can I? I mean she pepper sprayed me for no good reason.” Her stomach groweled. “Ugh but I am hungery and I don’t just want bread before dinner. Ohh what the hell?”
She tossed the candy into her mouth. “Mhhh. Such flavor. It is like a party in my mouth.”
Kevin walked up and patted her on the back. “Hey. Surviving all right?”
Gulp! Debby’s eyes went wide as she swallowed the piece of candy. “Aww. I wanted to enjoy that.”
“Enjoy what?”
She turned and smiled at her husband. “Oh nothing. I am sure it’s better that I didn’t get to enjoy it to much anywyas.” As she hugged her husband she felt a strange warming sensation spread throughout her body. Her skin felt almost rubbery. Debby pushed away from Kevin and graoned. “I umm feel a bit weird. I think I am going to sit down on the couch for a bit.”
“Oh ok. Do you want me to get you a glass of water?”
She smiled. “That would be great.” Gurrglgle. “Ugh and hurry.” As she walked over to the blue couch with padded seats Debby narrowed her eyes. “I knew I couldn’t trust Nori. She did something to that piece of candy. I am going to have to get her back for this. That. . .” She moaned. “Ohhh why do I feel so weird? Everything feels so. . .” She took a deep breath as she sat down. “I don’t have words to explain it.”
Debby winced as her phone suddenly rang. “Ugh who the hell could be calling me?” As she pulled her phone out of her jeans pocket she noticed the dirty look that her father and father in law were giving her. “What? I wanted to bring my phone with me. Sue me!” They went back to talking. Debby rolled her eyes as she scratched at her brown hair. “Juding old fools.” She raised the phone to her ear. “Hello?”
All she could hear on the other end of the phone was a Chrismas song. “Rudolf the Red nose Reigndeer.” The strange feeling in Debby’s body intensified. “Had a very shiny nose.” Debby winced as her shoes tighend onto her feet. “And if you ever saw it.” Her jeans tighend around her waist as the couch seemd to shrink beneath her. “You would even say it glows.” The couch groaned as Debby’s blouse closed in on her like a vice.
“What the hell is going on?”
Her father looked over. “Can’t you keep. . .” His eyes widdend. “What in the bloody hell?”
Debby’s father in law gasped. “Debby! You are having growth suprts at your age? What is wrong with you girl?”
Debby looked down and gasped as she noticed she had grown six feet. “What in the world?” As she stood up a button burst off her blouse, hitting her father in law in the face. “This isn’t happening.” Her face turned red as she noticed what she had just done to Kevin’s father. “Oh my god. I am so sorry.”
Her father in law grabbed his cane and stood up. “Debby. Growing in spurts like you just did is not an excuse for you to attack me or try and stip your clothing like some. . . some. . .”
“Jerod.” Debby’s father put his hands on Jerod’s shoulders. “Calm down. I am sure there is a reasonable explation for this.”
“Resnable? Your daughter is some kind of giantess. What kind of—
Debby backed away from the arguing old men. “I need to figure out just what happened to me.” She ran her hands through her hair. “I couldn’t’ of just grown without a reason. It defies all logic. Oww.” She hit her head on the ceiling fan as she walked towards the kitchen. “Damn this new height.”
“Wow. Did you bring steroids with you or something?” Nori held her hand over her mouth as she snickerd. “Any bigger and you wouldn’t be able to fit into the room.”
Debby gripped her hands into fists. “You are overexaggerating. I am only a foot away from the ceiling.”
Nori walked around her sister, making sure to tap Debby on the sides as she walked around. “I don’t know. You seem like you are too big for the house. Maybe you should go outside sis. Or at the very least into the garage. I mean how are you going to sit at the table with that giant ass. Mother would be so unhappy if you broke one of her chairs at that size.” She snickerd. “I can just see it now. Mother chasing Debby around because giant Debby clumsily chushed presious chairs and tables.
