A week earlier they had also won the domestic title, a title they would be stripped of following a bribery scandal surrounding their final game of the season.
And whilst the Champions League victory remains on the record books suspicion remains of foul play.

A theory I would have about why Hateley talked about the possible bribe later is that the 92/93 season is by far the best Rangers have ever performed in the European Cup / Champions League, so there is quite a lot of nostalgia for it. If he goes on a Rangers podcast, for example, that season and run in Europe is definitely something they would talk about (along with his goals against Celtic, etc.). If someone said "we were only stopped by Marseille, and they were well dodgy", I can see how he would then go on to make that allegation. It's at least somewhat believable because they actually did it to others. p.s. Burrachaga scored the winning goal in the 1986 World Cup.
