Sherlock Holmes Chapter One improved ultrawide and wider solution
Added 2021-12-04 02:02:19 +0000 UTCIt all began with a degree of disappointment around the game release, as my request for a game code via /r/ultrawidemasterrace and directly did not bear fruit, while the community was asking for a fix. There is not much I could do then but offer some guidance to PhantomGamers regarding his own solution, which ended up seemingly good for the most part and allowed wider screen users to play the game. The remaining major issue was the cutscenes and dialogue scenes still pillarboxed.
When I got access to the game via GOG, there were other games without a single solution, so I chose to prioritize those instead. Today PhantomGamers informed me of my 2019 solution for The Sinking City allowing to remove the black bars from the cutscenes even in Sherlock Holmes, and so it got me to finally have a look into the game and begin to produce a solution.
I found that even the combination of my fix for The Sinking City and the existing ultrawide fix for Sherlock Holmes did not allow to correct the field of view of the dialogue. I wanted to just add to what was available, not have to offer another solution to the same problem, but the config dump shared by PhantomGamers and the things I was told suggested that there was no way for his approach to fully fix the cutscenes.
So I had to resort to making a trainer, which relied mostly on my past Unreal Engine 4 research, though an additional layer of pillarboxing was unique to this game and had to be targeted individually. The community had addressed it by targeting the 16:9 aspect ratio but, as always, I wanted to make my solution compatible with every aspect ratio and not have the user worry about figuring it out, so I had to change the related function rather than the aspect ratio itself. As it often goes, the trainer also comes with the ability to toggle the fix and manipulate the field of view in real time.
