Warriors defense extras

Some director's cut stuff that didn't make the main video on GP2, switching concepts and help positioning.

Warriors defense extras

Ben we need that video on zone! Whenever I see teams play a possession in zone with smart defenders, I think "oh boy, this is some real spicy stuff! How neat!", but I don't really know what to be watching for. What should the offense be trying to do? How are defenders supposed to react to different situations? Who most likely made a mistake if someone gets a dunk? I've seen so many videos on running PnRs or switching on defense that I kinda understand what to look for on those things, but not at all for zone stuff.

No. This is something Ive been thinking for a while. Sometimes I hear people saying "This scorer will be great when he learns to defend" during the draft for example. That has left me asking: Does that happen? Ever?

Great content 👏👏

I can't remember anything that severe, at least not around an All-Defensive level defender. Is Wiggins the inspiration for the question?

He's looked so good in that specific role that I think he's part of the regular season rotation. He's also among their 4 best bench players IMO (OPJ, Iggy, Poole if he's bumped), so I assume he'll get minutes in some, if not most PS series.

So Kuzma is an example. Fair enough. Though that might be a case of "He had to play in LA and with LeBron, so we panicked, and misused him" But has anyone improved enough through the years in man to man defense to turn the minds of everyone watching? From Oh this guy is guarded by this scrub, this will end into a score, to years later being recognized as that dude who you really dont want guarding your best scorer?

Ben you get extra points for mentioning the peel switch! To my knowledge you’re the first non coach YouTuber to mention this concept

I'm a general bball nerd and a warriors homer, so I loved the YouTube video, and I'm this extra into the bonus content! Thanks for the extra biscuits! Question: Given his immense defensive impact in limited minutes, do you think GP2 will retain his current allotment once Klay returns? Or will he and the other perimeter bench (Lee, Iguodala, and maybe Poole) see a decrease in minutes across the board?

Eh, probably hard case to make one you go beyond the +/-. Even if it were the case, it's only because he's playing such a specialized role.

Gary Payton II is blowing up impact metrics currently: He is #1 in D-EPM and #1 in D-RAPTOR. In your opinion, does Payton have an argument for being the most impactful defender this year on a per-possession basis?

Your cutting room floor is probably better than 90% of NBA YouTube

Oh wow -- how "elite" do you mean? There are players who do the Kyle Kuzma thing, and go from lost/terrible when they enter the league to positives. But do you mean something like All-defense level?

So heres a question thats somewhat on topic, and you might be the only human with enough data to give a satisfying answer: Have there been NBA players that began their careers as bad defenders, and improved to be elite? Or is it mostly just instinct when you arent placed into the system like these Warriors?
