Surprise Ex&F video?!

Hello everyone!

So like most people, I’ve been getting a bit mad about this news story out of Sydney about a guy who imported plutonium. It’s all a bit strange and maddening so I thought I’d do something a bit different and make a video about it on Explosions&Fire!

I know it’s odd having an Ex&F video without any chemistry, but I think people will still find it very interesting and I do love a good reason to be mad at the government.

The guy is due to be sentenced on April 11, so I’ve been working with a hard deadline for the first time maybe ever lol, but it should hopefully be out in a few days or less!!!

On the chemistry front:: the next Extractions&Ire video will be back to an inorganic project, probably the ‘making yellow’ project. I’m still going to be doing cubane work in the background. Given that I still have 300ml of bromine, it’s probably worthwhile for me to run another identical tri-bromoKetal run now, so that we can do large scale of the next 2 steps (easy enough) and then reach the UV reaction with hopefully several hundred grams of material to work with- which would be amazing and good fun.

There’s also a perbromate (BrO4-) video I should make at some point given I’ve filmed a lot for that…. But another time

Okay that’s it, thanks as always for your support!!

Nuclear paranoia is a thing. It’s more of a result of the last three decades of terrorism has changed society in general

Thanks for covering it, didn't even know about it until now. Seems like the sample is a small ore rock encapsulated in a plastic cube that technically contains trace levels of plutonium... Sticking him with nuclear proliferation laws is wild. Reminds me of the case of a Sydney guy who 3D printed a prop gun from the Halo video games and got hit with weapons possession and manufacturing charges. Edit: seems the news reports are wrong, it wasn't an ore but an old Soviet era Pu smoke detector pellet sealed in a plastic cube.

And you’ve held a *visible* amount in your hands. When you went back to aus you probably accidentally “imported” a few atoms. Don’t let the government find out about that!
