Half Of Magic: The Gathering Will Not Be Magic: The Gathering

Starting in January, Universes Beyond is the new normal of Magic: The Gathering, in that Universes Beyond sets will be legal in all formats, including Standard and Pioneer and well, all formats, and…half of all Magic The Gathering sets will be Universes Beyond.

While I understand the feeling of most of the community with this kind of news I appreciate the take of the Prof saying that even then if you like the IPs just enjoy it and ignore everyone and have a good time! I personally am a big FF fan and the set had me smiling and waiting for the set, just wish we could get more OG Magic to complement for all the old fans that too deserve a love letter or content directly for them

The more these sets are released the more the game loses meaning. This game isn’t magic anymore, it’s a cheap knockoff. These cards genuinely feel like the fake cards you’d play with your friends at lunch in highschool for a laugh and then go back to actually playing the game - one crafted with poise and purpose. It feels like a cash grab before the end…

Didn’t even know that UB wasn’t allowed in Standard. I only play casual commander though, so that could explain it. I like UB, but for me the problem is going to be that there are too many of them to keep up with, just like secret lair. One big UB set per year would be just enough for my taste! I also think we just have too many sets in general per year. 7 sets in 1 year is just crazy!!! My poor wallet can’t keep up.

To me MTG is becoming more of a set of rules for a game that consists of random themes, thus a game without identity. And that is sad

I've been in the game since 97, I love this game and community, especially the artists who bring magic worlds to life, but now it's not about that anymore. I know many old OG artists who would love to come back to the game to do art, but illustrating Spiderman or what ever IP is not creating new and original content for the game. Spiderman is not Magic the Gathering. Sure they may have card with him on it, but he is not cannon in the world. I've hated that more and more of this game is becoming as horrible as the vinyl pop dolls. There isn't anything there but a "Hey, remember this thing?" Leaving the rest a hollow shell of what once was. I have always kept my commander decks to only Magic IP, and all of my stuff will continue to be only Magic IP, but having a space for only MtG cannon and vibes, is gone. Cube and Premodern are the last footholds of space where I can choose to not have the bombardment of constant nostalgia grabs. I get that enough from everything else in the world. I'll buy singles, I'll buy APs and support the artists directly, I'll keep all of my beloved Magic Cards. Wizards Can't Take That Away From Me. I will still find joy and love in this small corner of the game. The days of me buying new booster boxes or other new sealed products has died. It's dead like Aerith. It's dead like Uncle Ben. The essence, the soul of this game has been killed to make way for game pieces to promote out of date nostalgia grabs. I hope the D&D community is ready for the D&D SpongeBob IP crossover. They're comming for you next!

Haven't seen the episode yet, but the title makes me wary. There's a lot of toxicity around the "these aren't *real* Magic cards" segment of the player base and it's gotten exhausting to listen to.

It’s a strange dichotomy to be sure. How do you continued to love something that’s been such a presence in your life when you feel what always made it special for you is no longer there? For me it’s not that this is the direction, but how the direction has been navigated. It’s an understatement to say WotC could’ve handle the road map better. Though it’s easy for an outsider to say such things. I too, will continue to be a fan of Magic. Just the fandom will look a lot different than what it has before.

Yeah, I haven’t really played magic in a few years now and I’m not sure I ever will again. Enjoy your content prof but this game is clearly no longer a product for me. Glad the shareholders are happy tho

Sorry for typos, kid's game, etc

I've always reconciled this wasn't really a kids came I have been playing since 1994 but now it's starting to feel like I'm the old guy hanging out at the playground and I would definitely feel.creepy playing a SpongeBob card. Also.all the half dressed anime women who look like they're way too young to be wearing what they wear. I think it's about time for me to pack up my underground sea and wait to.see if my 5yo gets an interest at some point. He can add a tundra to his Peppa Pig voltron deck
