Doof! Canon - April Nomination Vote

Hey friends,

So sorry for the delay in this month's vote! Take a look at our nominations and let us know which you want to do a show on.

Harold and Maude (1971)

Young, rich, and obsessed with death, Harold finds himself changed forever when he meets lively septuagenarian Maude at a funeral.

Written by Colin Higgins and directed by Hal Ashby

Notes from the nominator:

Coming of age love story/black comedy between a 19-year-old man (Bud Cort) who is obsessed with death and a 79-year old woman (Ruth Gordon) who isn't. This is a cult movie that is definitely an acquired taste.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

An insane American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.

Written by Stanley Kubrick, Terry Souther, and Peter George. Directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Notes from the nominator:

This classic Cold War-era satire remains both funny and prescient in today's times. It's one of Stanley Kubrick's best and deserves a place in the Doof Canon.

Heathers (1988)

At Westerburg High where cliques rule, jocks dominate and all the popular girls are named Heather, it's going to take a Veronica and a mysterious new kid to give teen angst a body count.

Written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann

Notes from the nominator:

Twice now this movie has been nominated, and twice just barely missed it's shot. Surely the third time will be the charm!
Of all the classic John Hughes 80s high school movies, this movie is the greatest by far -- and it's not even directed by John Hughes! This movie is a delightful examination of what it's like to be a teenager and deal with new social situations, bullying, fashion, having your first boyfriend, murder, arson, and parents who just can't relate. It manages to encapsulate a very specific time and milieu in American culture perfectly, and is possibly the best movie for and about Gen X ever made.
So darling what you waiting for? Vote for Heathers today!

Before Sunset (2004)

Nine years after Jesse and Celine first met, they encounter each other again on the French leg of Jesse's book tour.

Written by Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke. Directed by Richard Linklater

Notes from the Nominator:

While every film in the Before trilogy is probably deserving of being in the canon, I think the second entry perhaps stands the tallest. The canon is also overdue a Linklater film.

Editor's Note: This film is great and I think you should absolutely watch it, but it is part 2 in a Trilogy and one of those movies that really needs to be watched after part 1 (Before Sunrise). The nominator specified this movie specifically so we're going with it. Totally vote for this one, but also be prepared to watch the first one too. I know I'm going to.
