Purity Culture & the “Death” of Comedy?

Afterwards I realized that these thoughts aren’t fully fleshed out, so I have removed the post from instagram & it will live here for now until I do a dedicated video essay on the topic. I’m really looking forward to it tbh. But I’d love to hear you thoughts below 😇

2025-08-22 16:17:46 +0000 UTCI don’t think comedy needs to always punch up. My question is always, “what is the harm being done?” It’s not just about hurting feelings. To what extent are we reinforcing oppressive systems? There is a difference between a fat joke and a fatphobic joke. A gay joke and a homophobic joke. The difference to me is, does the joke suggest “you should not exist in this state, you are inferior because of this trait, etc.” and I do think a lot of “big back” jokes veer into the “you should not exist” category. I also think about Kevin Hart’s infamous homophobic “joke”. Hearing these types of things all the time, especially in a world already programmed against you, can cause great psychological damage. If we DO bring stereotypes, are we reinforcing them or critiquing them? Are we laughing at the stereotype or are we laughing at the absurdity of the stereotype? Now your Cardi joke wasn’t an issue at all to me. As you said, her job is to be understood. And I don’t think it’s just her accent. Her sister Hennessy has the same accent but better diction. Sofia Vergara has a lovely HEAVY accent, and she cannot slouch on her diction, otherwise we will not catch what she’s saying. It’s her job! And this is where I think it’s people FEELING offended rather than actually being harmed. What harm is being done by telling a rapper to rap right?
