When it comes to complex issues like transitioning gender, which varies by state, often has multiple hoops to jump through, yeah you should at least understand enough to know the prevailing contentious issues (what affects people day to day), and have an outline of the main issues. Is it really that bad to ask that people talking on an issue are minimally informed about it?
