Trotsky was also issuing assassinations against members of the Politburo, not the least of which was Kirov, a member close to Stalin and who's assassination was the catalyst for the Purges of party members, nor were these show trials but actual court proceedings wherein defendants could make their case and be tried. Trotsky himself was an upstart, some one focused on prestige and airs and believed that he alone should control the party (even when Stalin was voted into the leadership of the Central Committee.) He was a traitor, a fool, and got what he deserved.
