Cynics vs. Cinema: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Here's your movie commentary before Abandon Hope later tonight! The guys watch a silent film, and enjoy it more than they thought they would.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 1920 German silent horror film. Considered the quintessential work of German Impressionist cinema, it tells the story of an insane hypnotist who uses a sleepwalker to commit murders. The film features a dark and twisted visual style.

29:35 I've had vivid dreams... some people call them "Echos" from previous lives or whatever. One of my very REAL ones was where I was walking through some crowded town square and everyone was dressed in like 17th or 18th century clothing? I even remember how I felt as a person in the dream (a different person) and some lady passes and like lightening a guy opens a cloak from behind her and there was a miniature crossbow and all of a sudden I felt the most intense pressure under my heart and everything was spinning violently. When the spinning finally stopped it was peaceful. Whether you believe 'past lives' are real or not, that was a really sudden and traumatic death. lol It felt like another life literally. I also dropped dead for 1 minute years back when I was 33. Don't know how I came back but I was stone dead. I hope you enjoyed my story. I guarantee you didn't. 😬

We got a claim still, but thankfully it didn't affect visibility.

PESSIMIST PRODUCTIONS

Can't copyright strike with no sound! (hopefully)

The True Nihilist

Rob zombie's living dead girl music video is heavily influenced by this movie

Kye Coolley

I had to watch this one twice before I commented. This was amazing. The colors, the acting, the twists, the foreshadowing that actually happens in the very beginning when we hear that he was driven from his home and children. He was basically admitting insanity at the start but we never see it. Beautiful Film.

Heather Squidz

Damn, this was actually a pretty good movie. More silent films would be cool.

Yehaen

Told you so!

Paul you rube, you buffoon, you simpleton! This is expressionist, not impressionist. Impressionism is lighting and colouration to emphasize the passage of time, while expressionism is characterized by the use of shadows and sharp angles to emphasize emotion and alienation.
