I enjoy the more skirmish level stuff, though having that big display army is always in the back of my mind. I was thinking about taking the 40k plunge, but the pandemic shut down game nights at my lgs. Warhammer has great lore, but I find their rules clunky. There are some great, skirmish level, miniatures agnostic rules out there. Stargrave is really good.
