2019-05-13 14:34:32 +0000 UTCI Don't know if I accidentally deleted my comment or if I did post it and I just can't find it but regardless just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this episode and I scored 74% on the test. As soon as you guy's read the question about loud noises I immediately went into another tab to take the test for my self because I myself have been diagnosed with A.S.D and i can't F*****g stand loud noise's, Especially train buckling.

2019-05-13 14:14:11 +0000 UTCIt had all the makings to be a fantastic episode. Shame they derailed it in the middle for 20 minutes to talk about Trump and how hot AOC apparently is. How does Trump or AOC have anything to do with autism? You have Flash Fried to talk about Trump bullshit.

2019-05-13 12:43:31 +0000 UTCBoth of my kids have autism and are home sometimes and sometimes in living groups for special kids. The system here in Holland is very different. The careworkers do not taze anyone and the care entails therapies, orthopedagogy, logopedy, pedagogy, psychology, psychiatry, and social workers as well. They are not places to dump your kids and leave them for no hope, as the mom describes. They are actually places where they try to help the kids to become as functional and self sufficient as possible. I have dealty with aggressive outbursts from both my children. In the living groups, as they call them here, they have special training andf protocols to deal with these outbursts. They have a protocol that you are not allowed to deal with an outburst with one person and they know how to restrain someone in a non violent manner. In my oldest childs case, though, there have been multiple occasions where the counselor on call has had to take paid leave because of incidents with them. Both of my children are very intelligent. My youngest has what used to be called idiosauvantism, which Paul had mentioned about, is no longer categorised as such. The reason for this is that it is a disharmonic IQ profile, one or more aspects of the IQ are extremely high and the other aspects are very low. What this means, is that the intelligence levels for the higher areas can be developed and there is opportunity to develop in those areas and broaden the knowledge in those areas. Whereas in the past, they thought that the areas of intelligence were static flukes and that the person did not understand or actually was not gifted in those areas. The term "gifted" was very sarcastic back in the day and meant only to give people a nice buffer against prejudices towards these people. In actuality, they are extremely gifted in one or more areas and can eventually be a functional part of society, perhaps even bring great change due to the innovative abilities, indeed. I can understand if you live in the US, based on the system there, that you would not feel comfortable doing anything besides homeschooling your child. The system here, has a bad glitch for these kids as well, as generally there is a legal obligation to go to school and these children do not do well in school environments. For my youngest, I had to go through an entire legal process to get permission to take him out of school, so they could focus better on his issues. When he was 3 years old, one of the most famous professionals told me that he would never speak, when he already had 80 words, just did not use them on anyone but me. Because I took him out of school and he was in an observation living group, I could prove that he had words and understanding. Not every parent is strong enough to do legal fights or speak out against proffessionals who they know aree wrong. They said he would never speak and his development would stop at 12 and he would be basically a walking mental vegetable. Today his level for geography is about a 14-15 year old, as he is only 11. He understands complex philosophical terms like "speculation", which most 11 year olds can not. He has a photographic memory and reads classical books like the original Jungle Book, The Hobbit, and classic poetry. But, he has no understanding of social rules and also can not deal with any type of loss in structure very well. But he was not going to talk. This is a very traumatic process for many parents to deal with things like this and it is very risky and painful to fight the system on these things. I am sure in America it is much worse.

2019-05-11 09:13:51 +0000 UTCMy guess is that the screen-based autism thing isn't really an issue. Human neuroplasticity is really impressive, even post-childhood development. I think if anything, lack of emotional connection and neglect from PARENTS using screen devices could cause antisocial behaviors and in extreme cases maybe some actual mental disorders, but we've already established that whether a person falls under the wide umbrella of autism is largely determined by genetic factors rather than environmental ones. But as far as phones go, think about the human as a machine. We are animals of the eye, and process everything visually first. When we are babies, the first thing our gaze focuses and affixes on is almost always a human face. Angle, whether it's centered or facing away, eye contact, and subtle facial cues all play a role in how human faces are perceived. A parent's eyes should primarily be on their child, and eye contact/face to face interaction is incredibly important in terms of social development. Just think of all the mothers who might in a bored tone ask their kids "how was school" each night with her face buried down in her phone, not even giving their own kids the time of day. Just caught in that dopamine loop. After shit like that, it's no stretch that a kid could walk away with some social and behavioral maladaptions that might LOOK like autism. But is it really, actually autism? Ehhhhh definitely debatable. Great ep. so far guys! I choked on a bong hit laughing at the sandwich autist and almost fuckin died. Good shit. Oh and sorry if I'm an insufferable, pedantic, socially awkward autist lmao what can I say

2019-05-11 09:11:16 +0000 UTCI was diagnosed with pdd.nos when I was 4 years old. I started having seizures a couple years ago, and they found that I have cortical dysplasia in my left temporal lobe. The reason they diagnosed me with pdd.nos was due to me having issues with speech, but people who have damage to the temporal lobe typically having learning disabilities with language processing and execution. Psychiatrists are the only medical doctors who don't evaluate the organ they are supposed to be treating, so I was given pdd.nos as a throwaway label. If they gave me an MRI as a little kid, they would have known what the exact empirical cause was to my learning disabilities. Anyone can be diagnosed with autism!!!

2019-05-11 08:00:13 +0000 UTCI'm labeled as autistic. Some lady saw that I was good with shapes and video games. Sure, I really hate eye contact with new people, but I've never had a problems making friends. I'm actually a social butterfly. Just somehow, on paper, I have Asperger's. I've got a management position job and I'm capable of everything. Literally just hate looking at people's eyes. And what I assume is a Sevier case of OCD. And my emotions sometimes go into overdrive. Maybe I'm growing a vagina. Lmao

2019-05-11 02:44:33 +0000 UTCI'm high functioning autist, but I went to a special school at one point for people with autism. There were kids that were as normal as me and there was also a low functioning kid who was JUST like the stevie guy in the video who I befriended while I was there. I remember the first time he repeated a literal screeching noise and as a 12 year-old I yelled "COULD YOU STOP?!" and the teacher next to me calmly said "No." and then it hit me what I was dealing with. I developed a fascination with the lower functioning autists and I think it's the reason I have a fascination with Chimpanzees. Not to insultingly compare the two. I don't see an ape as a creature to be reviled or looked down upon in any way. I kind wanna work with apes now though. Because I like to see humanity where other people don't.
