Oh they knew it was a dildo, the entire dig site would have been laughing about it for the last month. We make a big deal out of finding anything phallic on site. Unfortunetly we have to look at the "less obvious" options as well, but the consensus was that it was a used dildo found in the Roman equivilent of a bin.
