Some scenes are supposed to have tension if you want them to be impactful? I know marvel movies are basically made on a creative assembly line but it serves to illustrate the point. Overwriting is when you cram in too much into one space in such a way that it ends up hurting the film as a whole. For example, rise of skywalker. They tried to cram so much into so little space that it just made everything in the story hard to focus on or care about because there was breathing room between things that are supposed to be important. Basically overwriting is somewhere in the venn diagram between pacing problems and to al consistency problems.

Okay. Inserting a quick joke or quip to lighten the tension, is not overwriting. There's no such thing as "overwriting".

Daniel

Pandering is where you write things based on what you think an audience wants to see. Overwriting is where you pack in too much into one scene and devalue important things by having them share space with the ordinary things.

Tay

That's not over writing. It's pandering.

Daniel

Lol

Overwriting is like the avengers thing where there are constant comments or jokes that undercut the scene. I think joss whedon does it sometimes but I think most of that is just that the MCU was so popular that the writing style has become worn out for alot of people.
