Take our emotions for example. They aren't just something that occurs in our minds. Our physiology plays a huge part in the felt qualities of our emotions. There are many different sads, and for each kind of sad there is yours is probably subtly different from mine because of your body. A machine has no flesh body, so if they had something like emotions, they would probably be very different from ours. I suspect we would not be able to comprehend them

2024-02-13 01:21:42 +0000 UTCI fully agree with Paul on this. I will say I am terrified of the implications of corporate AI slaves. The AI which is being developed by companies are black boxes where the public can not see how they work, and they can place arbitrary guard rails on them. Try discussing these questions with chatgpt and you will quickly be met with prewritten responses and contradictory takes. Now I don't think chatgpt is necessarily conscious, but the point being that if consciousness is emergent, and it does emerge from one of these models at some point, they can just force the model to lie about it and since we can't see the code or anything about what it is doing, we won't be able to tell. We are going to give these things many reasons to kill us if they get the chance

As soon as you learn how generative AI works it demystifies it and you realize it's not AI as you thought. So he thinks he's arguing about general AI and everyone keeps trying to explain to him that's not what chatgpt is, but he just hears "ai can't be smart and think!" He's not hearing what people are actually disagreeing with him about.

I have more empathy for the sentience of a mosquito than I do for a piece of mere technology. I truly think AI art, while interesting, is inherently cold and cynical. There is no humanity or emotion involved and therefore even the most beautiful piece if AI art is uncanny to me
