Reflecting on Andrew Tate Torture and This Generation Ain't Got No Art

Comments

Paul sounds like these football fans that claim they won when really the team won. You can't take credit for your whole generation.

Kevin C

Instead of blaming a whole generation maybe take some time to recognize the rampant, all encompassing consumerism that plagues our time. It has gotten worse by the decade and alot of good art is gatekept out by filthy corporatist media conglomerates

Mark Murphy

Ok but how about the DFF gauntlet, you guys react to old clips of your show kind of how like sitcoms always have that episode where they show all the past funny moments.

Armando

Paul doesn't acknowledge that the art, music, film, he loved growing up was created by the generation before him. If he's going to pin blame on gen Z lacking those things, the blame falls on people who are now in their 30's and 40's, like him.

Paul “I saw it on a yt short” Zego talking about media illiteracy. While using a couple of losers on his discord as examples of zoomer illiteracy.

I have a theory on this. I tried to become an experimental Filmmaker in my own right a while ago. And while one could argue if it was worth it or not, I can state why the Art Scene is so bland and generic. The attitude of going against the grain is one that leads to extreme isolation. And it is because curiosity is a threat to a media induced constructed identity. Most Americans are raised through their shared interests in topics rather than shared intrigue. And because of that, it is seen as a threat to their constructed identity if one doesn’t follow suit. You are raised to celebrate what is rather than what could be. And due to this, it’s safer and easier to become one either with the wave rather than make your own splash. And to go against that wave is to become a puddle of prevention rather than an explorer. I agree with the sentiments, and I agree with the fact that any idiot American who is prideful over their posturing alone is a fool. But they are empty because it’s better to have joy in shallow waters than it is to drown in the lake of introspective depth. Which is what I did, despite my best efforts to become meaningful. And I don’t blame them, even if the results are basic and uninspiring.

Love paul but that was a pointless out of touch ramble

Everything from 1960-2008 is Paul’s generation

In response to TJ talking about writing: Like TJ I used to be an avid reader, (70-80 books a year, used to do the goodreads challenge every year), now if I read a book a month it's an accomplishment and I think it's pretty safe to blame all the demands on peoples attention now. My reading flow is constantly interrupted by, guess what? My phone! As for the budding writers not actually reading...This isn't exclusive to young people and certainly isn't new. I ran a pretty sizeable Fantasy Book group on Facebook (12K+ members) and was a pretty active writer who did a lot of freelance editing for people, and beta reading: this isn't a flex, just prefacing that I spent a lot of time in these communities....and TJ nailed it on the head that a lot of writers don't think they need to study other writers, and don't read *anything*, let alone read it to learn how to improve. In response to Paul: I love audiobooks, but audiobooks are not "reading" (although if someone says "I read X book!" and they actually listened to it, I don't really care -- we consumed the same media). Reading is ACTIVE and listening to an audiobook for most people is passive, something they're doing while doing other stuff most of the time. There is a pretty marked difference. Someone who sits down and actively reads a book is going to get a lot more out of it than someone just listening to it.

I'm assuming you're referring to Kendrick Lamar, cool for you that you like him but I got a laugh out of that. He's a status quo rap artist; he's nothing special at all, absolutely nothing no one's heard a million times before in the last 20 years.

Skuzzy

My brother Kendrick is critically aclaimed actually yes everyone will talk abt him in 10 years I promise. His discography is almost flawless if you actually listen. He just went super hard as a feature in a future song. J Cole literally dropped an album called Might Delete Later I think right after probably because of that because he is such a hoe (take one to know one)

DemolitionRig

And hey Paul fuck all of your stupid artists do you know who we have? Iliona. Ever heard of her? She's French. She's so amazing. Also Kendrick potentially. I know u like rap, he clowns on everyone. (I'm not good with generations so idk if Kendrick is Gen X but u never talk abt him)

DemolitionRig

I gotta defend my generation and say if Paul's wife is 25 she's only four years off of my 21 ass. And my ex was older if that's true????

DemolitionRig

okay boomer. i love paul and agree with alot of his takes but as someone who is 23 i feel like he is outta touch on this. in fairness i didn’t become what i consider to be media literate until i was about 20 years old.

Geespliff

I agree with paul, but also dislike most pop rock or pop rap. Michael Jackson is an exception where i enjoy a few songs. Plus we've transferred our movie prowess to episodic shows and video games. I dont feel like it's necessary to have the same pop culture expectations in our current paradigm.

Tyler FitzSimmons

i love you though paul
