I'm not a Drake fan at all (aside from a couple songs and features) and I think he's wildly overrated. But when you're talking about who's influential or made a more than notable presence in modern pop culture, Drake is definitely up there. When you talk about album sales; streams, derivative post artists and albums, etc. Drake definitely held the torch in that regard. You have to take your personal bias out of the equation when evaluating the influence and reach of bands and artists. I also don't care much for Eazy E but I wouldn't deny his influence and pop culture presence being significant. He was great for what he did but even Dre and DOC have said he couldn't write his own lyrics and needed a lot of help and coaching in the booth. He was far from a natural rapper.

R.F. Kuang is a great gen z young writer that writes amazing fantasy books and recently released “Yellowface,” a satirical book that questions if who has the right to write whose stories as well as comments on how harmful the publishing industry and social media is to art. Platforms like Goodreads and Tiktok’s Booktok make it so the “next big book” is only relevant for a second before they are pushing another author or another book series. It’s like the 24 hour news cycle, where we are constantly moving on to the next thing. And because of this, the music and book industries are pressuring successful artists to continuously churn out something new - which stifles creativity. I work at B&N, and I see some of these authors confirm the release date of the sequel to their book that was just released. We have to constantly be consuming media and can’t take a breath and absorb whatever we just read or listened to.

What you guys fail to understand, is that because of the internet being as prevalent as it is, it has created a space where you have small to large cells of culture. You act like there is no culture in this generation, that's not true, you just aren't catching on to the fact that there is no more mono culture. This comes off as really out of touch. There's plenty of artists and such, just because you don't know where they are, doesn't mean they don't exist. This is just perpetuating more of the same "in my generation" that you get mad at boomers for. It's exactly the same.

Eve

Raphael Bob-waksberg the creator of Bojack horseman is a older millennial, and Bojack is one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. So with Vivzie pop and Raphael those are the people in my generation that I most admire cuz I love animation.

Marcos

Vizepop the creator of hazbin hotel and helluva boss is a millenial artist whos done well for herself. I have a lot of freinds who are talented artists but they arent famous or successful. I mean I dont think theres a lack of talented young people, but its kinda of hard to blow up and become a famous artist, when theres so much content competing for attention.

Marcos

Im a young millenial, which is kind of old now, and there was heavy metal clique at one of the highschools I went too. And i really loved old heavy metal and old rock cuz the pop music of my day was justin beiber and the jonas brothers. So I definelty embraced music I heard when i was really little and discovering older music because the pop music from my youth was horrendous. I definetly experienced the trend of people wearing band shirts of bands they knew nothing about when i went to college. Guns and roses and defleppard shirts are sold in department stores now, and most people who wear them dont care about rock.

Paul can't handle the fact that people have different tastes. Not everyone has to like the things you like.

PlatinumDL

Paul what is the point of talking so much and being do critical when you yourself have no physical ability, barely any talent, a mediocre frustrated wanna be actor, rapper and? Oh yea all you have is excuses. If you are so tired of the quality or art why not show yours? So lazy cant even do videos on movies anymore and that was your thing. Put some effort yourself before talking so much phatty

Jan

What Paul said about Kendrick is something somebody who is trolling would say lmao. You can put him in your top 3 of all time and old heads and young kids in the rap community will 100% hear you out. There’s not even a debate among anyone whether he’s top tier or not. His story telling and writing is next level. Section 80 , good kid mad city, damn and to pimp a butterfly are masterpieces. His ability to make a concept album is unparalleled. Mr morale and the big steppers honestly is great too but gets some flack for being too experimental. It’s obvious Paul is totally unfamiliar with any of his music and that’s a shame because he missed out. Plus Kendrick is from Compton I’d think he’d be simping for him pretty hard. Ignorant, lol.

Jonathan Griswold

Oh Paul. You can be such a great guy, but this. This was one of his worst takes . I'm 33, so like a young millennial and my favorite artist at the moment cause it changes a lot, is Ren Gill. He's not even American. he's a Welsh rapper but also does other kinds of music. I really hope you take some time and look into him. I think he is truly talented artist. Maybe not mainstream popular like Michael Jackson but no less talented if you ask me.

Jeremiah

Can we stop with this generation shit throwing it's retarded, I hate it when it's thrown at any generation it helps nothing

NotAProSkater

You should post this as a video Paul's points on music is 100%. Been saying the same thing for awhile

A huge problem with Education, at least in Canada is how schools are funded as well. Never mind that the education system is largely a century out of date, but School Boards are profit-motivated. If students are doing poorly in a school district, no one asks "How can we fix this?" the answer to the problem is: "cut funding". This incentivizes school boards to pass students *no matter what*, and as someone who's worked in education, and has family members who worked in education. In the schools around my area, students cannot fail if they achieve over 30% grade, and even if they achieve under that the Teachers of those classes need to sit down with the Principal, a Councilor and another staff member and essentially argue the student deserves to fail (a recommendation frequently ignored). The inside of the Canadian education system specifically is a blackhole of money and horribly misappropriated funds with districts scrambling at end-of-term to spend Government funding they didn't use because they didn't need it so they can get more for the new budget. It's fucked.

Skuzzy

Yeah... I mean Taylor Swift hit the scene in 2006. Most of her early fans are adults with children now.

Skuzzy

The Nirvana shirts aren't because Gen Z has no artists worth a damn is because capitalism gutted the imagery of that band to pump out endless merch. Everything you bring up Paul is an example of how capitalism has ruined art. But you'll still defend AI art, the tool of the suits.

ounocat

I don't really get why Paul thinks we NEED a zoomer Jackson. He says it's a problem but not why. Midia literacy is a problem for sure but people not being mainstream but not mainstream enough so it changes mainstream. What exactly is wrong with me wanting to make music of a specific subgenre if it's what I enjoy? Shouldnt art be about self expression? If I ever catch Paul on saltrakis I want to pick his brain a bit to clarify. Of course if he feels I'm on his level or feel like it's worth it to talk about

NotAProSkater

Small correction - Taylor Swift does have some cross-generational appeal. A lot of soccer moms are avid fans. Also - production is easier, yes, but distribution is harder than ever. Not only is everything marketed to an extreme niche (per Scotty or TJ) but the current market (for music as an example) is too saturated. I’d honestly say distribution was easier before the advent of streaming.

As for Filmmakers I have no idea because I have not seen many good movies for quite some time, that's why I watch so many films and TV shows that came out way before I was born(I'm 23 By the way)

Aron Clark

The only people I can say could potentially be recognized in years to come for music, are for cross appeal the musician known as Ren, for him I recommend the full version tale of jenny and screech. For metal fans the musician known as Justin Bonitz who does concept albums, he is both a solo musician and a member of a band. The solo stuff is under the name Hungry Lights, I recommend his first solo album Awry Ascent as it is the first part of a five album story. For his band which is named Tallah which has Dream Theatre's Mike Portnoy's Son Max on drums(By the way Justin can do multiple instruments as well as genres but is most notable for vocals). I recommend Tallah's first album Matriphagy once again its a concept album. Tallah is labelled as 'Nucore' which is Nu metal and Deathcore mixed, its a very unique band. As for Ren though he is a rap artist along with other genres, he only just got big with his song Hi Ren which is about his struggles with Lyme Disease. The Last thing I will say on the two musicians, is that Ren is an independent Artist and Justin Bonitz is tied to Earache Records, and my favourite songs from Ren is The Full Version of The Tale of Jenny And Screech. My favourite Tallah song off Matriphagy is We The Sad and my favourite Hungry Lights song from Awry Ascent is Wither.

I feel like those niche categories are more accessible than ever, and peoples tastes have never been so singularly focused. Like cave diving? Great. I bet you can watch a feed of it somewhere. Space? Don’t even get me started, the Parker Solar Probe literally touched the Sun in perhaps the most stunning visual spectacle ever recorded. (Bit of my taste there) Movies might not be the cultural lightning rod they have been in the past, but what Paul isn’t considering is that maybe back in the 80’s and 90’s, there wasn’t as much media forms out there to be consumed, with wide appeal. Tik tok might be distasteful to many, but the fact remains that almost everyone who has seen a few find something appealing. Youtube is the same. I will absolutely give Paul this however, the upcoming generations are disturbingly illiterate. Being incapable of forming basic sentences, much less managing to spell at all? It’s sad, and education is woefully unsatisfactory. It’s also likely incapable of addressing the issue.

Like TJ was saying, the landscape of things has changed between generations - people in my generation don't really care too much about movies (in my experience), instead what people dream of is YouTube / TikTok fame, and I don't blame them - take one good look at how much money can be made in this stuff and it's clear to see why people don't give a fuck about movies like they used to. Even then I would argue there is plenty of talent in this generation, but it's not all in a single person like a Michael Jackson. Instead, I feel like the talent is far more spread out in things like indie games, YouTube stuff, and in my personal experience a lot of artistic talent is also in people who draw furry art. You might not recognize these people as being 'talented' because they're not pulling in millions being a world wide hit sensation, but I think there are plenty of talented people who all have their own niche and those niches don't tend to overlap much so it's not as visible.
