Paul when talking about Zoomer's music taste: "I don't need to like the music you like and that's okay."
Paul when talking about movie taste: "TJ your shitty incorrect opinions infuriate me."
Great show. I loved the passion and energy. I liked TJ's takes and Paul's and Scotty's real-time reactions to them made for great entertainment.

I knew the terrible LOTR and Scarface takes were coming, but other than that I agreed way more with TJ than I thought I would. Particularly on Seven.

TJ, just likes popcorn films. A Roger Ebert type dude. That's fine. I'm no art critic, just admit that your waist isn't the best

This was TJ's revenge on Paul for the Mystery Gauntlet and you can't convince me otherwise.

Wait, did Paul just say that Slo-mo from the Dredd Movie, a movie he has claimed too see "20 or 30 times" is "administered via eye droppers"? WTF? Common Paul, I too love the 2012 Dredd movie and have seen it maybe 5 or 6 times and Slo-mo is 10000% an inhaled drug administered from a device resembling a modern inhaler, come the fuck on Paul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mHjLk8GshA

Idk about that Kevin Smith one, bro. I think it's pretty obvious that he's a total joke, hence not a hot take. This might have been controversial 15 years ago, but he fell off sooooo long ago that at this point it's just obvious that he's irrelevant. I've always hated his shit tho and knew that none of it would be remembered after a decade or so. Thankfully his time is over. Same with Wes Anderson, thank fucking Christ!
Now that shit you're talking about BttF, now that's a hot take! Ppl are gonna know who Marty McFly is for decades to come, to pretend otherwise is just sad cope (yes I know the 3rd one sucks).

Great episode. Shitty takes were promised and TJ delivered. I do think it’s pretty strange a dude who works for a company called Pessimist Productions thinks Se7en was too over the top with its extremely cynical theme/message

One of the best episodes. Don't want to crap on what yall are doing currently because there's a lot that I love about it, just not big on the slog that is the news. Makes me want to go back and listen to the classic episodes

So here's my take on Robocop. I love the original. One of my all time favorites. I like 2 as well, but it just doesn't stick with me like the 1st. I don't know exactly why, but it doesn't. Again, I don't think it's shitty, far from it, but I just can't put it on the same level as one.

Blow staring Johnny Depp is infinitely superior to Scarface and it’s based (albeit loosely) on a real dude. Also Fury is another great Brad Pitt performance that I don’t feel like gets brought up too much .

My turn. I bet I have some hot takes that would make TJ scream as hard as Paul in this episode. Let’s begin-
Back To The Future is only good because of its premise- The premise of Back To The Future is brilliant. But the movie behind it is a basic/bland portrayal of 1950s ideals. I actually love the movie Pleasantville because it is what Back To The Future should have been. And I tend to create my own movie in my head based on the premise of seeing my parents rather than caring about Marty McFly and his 2-Dimensional Family.
The whole trilogy is also overrated. They are fun but they aren’t anything special. And they are extremely hokey. I understand it’s supposed to be lighthearted. But it goes too far and it feels like a sitcom.
Back To The Future is bland and anybody who celebrates it beyond the surface is easily amused.
Quentin Tarantino Has Terrible Pacing and is mostly celebrated for his aura rather than his material- I want to make it clear that Tarantino is better than 90% of Hollywood. He actually makes movies that has their own vibe and it is very distinct. You can tell that he makes his own kind of movies. And no matter what, that should be celebrated.
Outside of Pulp Fiction though, all of his movies are horribly paced. Especially his Historical Films. I actually really love slow films (2001: A Space Odyssey is my favorite film of all time). But the issue is that Tarantino cares more about build up than he cares about creating a satisfactory flow. And I don’t respect that, especially when he does it over and over again. There are so many times in his movies where I sigh in seldom. Like it’s a chore to get through so much of what he creates. And it’s because he is so obsessed with his own dialogue and style and not enough with the pace of his vision.
He’s a good director. A great director if you compare him to the Stereotypical Hollywood System. But he is flawed. Anybody (aside from you three of course, lol) who blindly defends everything he does is eating up the hype and not really tasting the dish. Because if you did, you must admit that there is some dry meat and unseasoned vegetables in his visual meals.
Films should be more about exploring ideas rather than telling stories- This is broad, but I used to work as an Experimental Filmmaker (or I tried to as nobody can really work as one). But I hate the Three Act Structure. I hate the Hero’s Journey and I think most Hollywood Films act like a manual to success rather than a true passion to make the best films possible. The largest issue is this. Movies focus too much on their Actors and their Plots, and not enough on the Immersive/Visual Properties that make Film unique. I think most films would actually be great if it was a Visual Journey focused on The Audience rather than on a Main Character. Back when I tried as an Experimental Filmmaker, I brought up that The Film Industry needed to go through a 20th Century Modern Art Like Transformation. As TV Shows and Videogames can tell better stories for the most part. And I still believe that. Most people would call me a traitor to the scene of dreams that is Modern MovieMaking. Especially those who worship the Hollywood System like a religious institution of truthful expression.
Toy Story 4 is better than 3- Neither of these films are anything great. But I enjoyed Toy Story 4 more than I enjoyed Toy Story 3. In all honesty, Toy Story 3 feels like it’s giving a white/suburbanite superficial lens to growing up. And granted, the whole series of this thing is very Middle America. But the movies before 3 were mostly fun with little bouts of potential depth (and I never liked it). But the ending of Toy Story 3 is fucking hilarious and not sad at all. Toy Story 4 on the other hand, had a more mature message. And the setting of 4 is more dynamic and fun than 3. The ending of 4 just allowed Woody to move on, no big goofy moments, and the film ends with him starting his new life. Rather than reminiscing.
Speaking of Pixar, Wall-E is the only 10/10 Film they ever made- Pixar, particularly early Pixar, is held in high regard. And most of the time, it is overhyped. The Toy Story Series is fun but silly. Monsters Inc. is really overrated outside of the animated world. The Incredibles is smart at first but the resolutions are half baked. Ratatouille is fun but also bland besides the critics monologue. Up is only great at the beginning. Coco is fun but is only good because of the end. Inside Out is quirky. And every other film they made is bad.
Wall-E is the only 10/10 movie they ever made because it is genuinely impressive. Making it mostly silent. Making a honest dystopian landscape. Critiquing our world and the status of what our future might look like. It is genuinely impressive how impressive Wall-E is. Which also exposes how flat the rest of their films are in comparison.
Last One: Kevin Smith is a total joke
This man is a nerd. And I don’t like that, but I can see the appeal. That being said, his movies are the most overrated trash to ever exist. Even his so called god films. Mallrats is honestly one of the most boring popular films to ever exist. And yes, I am able to consider the fact that it represents the 90s generation. But unlike something like Liquid Television or Rockos Modern Life or whatever, there is no sense of kinetic style in his works. Nor is there a reason for me to care outside of the fact that it was popular.
The largest issue with Kevin Smith is that he tries too hard to be funny and doesn’t care about the impact of the Art. Most of the time it doesn’t work. And none of his films have lasted the test of time. Even his films that should be timeless. Like Clerks. It should be timeless as more people are in that situation now than they were then. But it tries to hard to be funny and doesn’t let the impact of the hopeless situation take place.
He is a relic of his time. A relic of the American Desire to create sitcom-esque wastes of time over impactful art. His movies lack style, lack impact and lack anything outside of his characters. He is a nerd who is celebrated for being a good hearted nerd. And that’s cool. But that doesn’t make great movies. And I don’t understand his appeal at all. I understand Tarantino even if I find him overrated. Kevin Smith might as well be Rob Schneider in my mind.
I DARE YOU TO REACT. JK. But seriously, I give TJ a lot of props for creating this kind of content, even though I disagree with most of this takes.
Hopefully more of you do the same. The target of popular perception deserves to be questioned. And I really like the ways this can open up our biases and our ideals with this medium,

When you all talked about the ringwraiths and the one ring and who controls them, you were all partially right about it. Tolkien in his later years wrote about this very thing, and he speculated that once Frodo held the ring for long enough, and learned to control and wield it to a degree, that the ringrwaiths would no longer be able to attack or harm him. Tolkien speculated that the ringwraiths towards the end of Return of The King could no longer harm Frodo, and were partially subservient to him. If Frodo did not destroy the ring, the ringrwraiths would have tried to convince Frodo to be the new dark lord, but betray him at an opportune time and trick him into dying so they can give the ring back to its true master. This was al written about by Tolkien in his later memoirs.
