Does he want a peace summit where perhaps some compromises are made and the war ends? Because I'd support that. But the way he talks about it makes it sound like he just wants Russia to conquer Ukraine.

He obviously doesn't support the actions of the US government, so why bother defending it? Especially when what he is asking for is likely to lead to more government authoritarianism by giving them the ability to consider American citizens as traitors/ terrorists. Under these conditions that you want to create, you yourself would likely be considered a traitor. Especially considering that you go against a lot of State Department stances.
