I think the shift towards the extreme body image is probably because people cover up less now. In the past you could achieve the popular silhouette with shapewear and basically everyone who could did(and historical shapewear outside of extreme examples is not as bad for you as is popularly imagined). You can't wear a girdle when the fashion is crop tops.
