Well.... its worth noting that if fragging of russian officers is going on in ukraine russia probably wouldn't be telling anyone. So its entirely possible that officers are getting murdered and its just getting written down as battle casualties or something. We probably won't know one way or the other for a number of years. Generally speaking though on desertion, humans want to survive and if people don't feel they could run away and survive they will continue fighting because its marginally better odds of survival. Consider again the viewpoint of the guy in the situation, if you run away you'll probably get executed, you could walk into a minefield, you're in the uniform of the invading army in hostile territory so theres a chance if you wander out of the bushes by the railroad track somewhere a local could just assume you're part of some advance group and shoot you, or you could just end up in a situation where you walk for days and then you just have no food and no friends.

Like lets say in an alternate universe where the US and Mexico were in some crazy war where the US is trying to take territory, and I got drafted, I wouldn't be happy with the US and I would rather shoot whoever my officer was..? If it seemed impossible to do either thing without being a retribution torture case or whatever, I'd probably eat a bullet. I've seen stuff where same-nationality soldiers torture to death the "cowards" as a lesson to would-be deserters.

That's part of why the Chinese warlords era and the holocaust in the balkans were so brutal. Also not to excuse it but factor in the psychological situation of a Russian soldier right now, you've probably been conscripted(in some cases right out of school), your job is shit, you're probably going to die, everything is blatantly mismanaged to horrendous degrees, and your choices of a stress outlet are alcohol and the local civilians.

2022-10-24 18:34:08 +0000 UTCUpsetting info fyi: I saw a video the other day of some Russians slicing a Ukrainian soldier's dick and balls off with a box cutter and then executing the poor guy via bullet to the head. There was no questioning amongst the torture, pain was the objective. I don't understand these things. How do you fight a battle against people who didn't ask for violence, on behalf of a government who lies to you, and then torture these people with vigor? Doesn't make sense to me how these Russian soldiers can rape random civilians and dump them into mass graves. What narrative do you have to be told to want to do that to your enemy? I don't want to believe that it's so easy for sooo many random soldiers to become such sadists. I know these things happen in war, but I guess I felt like there had to be some longstanding and deeeeep contempt for this sort of thing to happen..? I don't know.

Between his giant size and their flimsy cracked mud walls, I can only imagine the best/worst remake of the old Godzilla movies ever.
