The way I laughed out loud when you reenacted rachel and finn's goodbye LMAO. I've never watched glee because I thought it was overrated but I've been binging your glee reactions and I actually enjoy your reactions more than the show itself. Excited to watch the rest!

Was drinking and did not feel like verifying my spelling. It's been years since I have referenced these names and I'm not that invested, other than having revisited good memories for a bit.

Also, not sure If you may already know this, but Christen Chenoweth and Edina Menzel were the original Broadway production actors for Wicked. Edina will come out in later episodes of Glee as well (Not a spoiler, as many Broadway actors will be on this series)

This show makes me miss NY Broadway. I know friends in NY consider that area a tourist trap, (and I do hate when "tourist" go in gym shorts and let their kids put up their stinky sock feet on chairs and rails in front of them) but I've always loved musicals and the intense effort these actors put into their shows. Unfortunately, I have never gotten to see Christen Chenoweth perform in person, she is one of my favorite Broadway actors. I love her performance of "Glitter and be Gay" (Operetta Candide) especially. Very, somewhat "Insane"? (She was brought in by Pattie Labelle (oops, drunk, meant Patti LuPone), lol) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjHe9LY4bS0

Love Christen Chenoweth! Love Cabaret! First time I saw Cabaret was at the old Studio 54 building 20 years ago! The meaning behind the show has always left a lasting impression. All you heard at the end was soft gasping crying through the silence from the crowd. My most favorite musical ever. Have to mention, that the last time I saw it locally was when actor that played Justin on QAF played MC and (I used to have 2nd row aisle seat season tickets and it had benefits of being selected in shows) he pulled me up from the seat to do a bit of ballroom dancing, lol. Best experience ever! Had straight men in the restroom later commenting their happy jealousy over getting that fun experience. :-)

Because when they conceived of the show, it wasn't about a character named Mercedes. Nor was it conceived for an actress named Amber Riley.
It's really quite simply. Ryan Murphy was so impressed by Lea Michelle in Spring Awakenings he specifically created a project for her to be the lead.
Period.
So it's not like the creators don't know that Amber Riley is very talented. They absolutely do. But it's not her story they are telling.
And of course just like we have personal preferences in what we like, the creators.
Now there are three primary factors that have major impact on how significant a person role on a show is.
1. The Creators. Do they like what they see and hear (and this is going to be acting, singing, everything). Does what they see inspire them creatively. For example, Ryan is likely going to connect far easier to Kurt's character. Thats goin got help feed his desire to write for that character.
2. Fans letters (emails, ect) to the show. They can track all of this, so people who take the time to speak to the production or even to the actors, help show the writers what the audience is responding to. Now this doesn't necessarily reflect the views of the total audience. But it's the best gauge producers get.
3. How do Network and Studio executives feel about things. These are usually the business people, the bean counters. There issues may have absolutely nothing with talent or ability. They are more focused on things like the look of the cast, what demographics they appeal to. Is there anything about them that wouldn't have broad appeal to the market.
Amber has mention in several interviews, how her early career attempts were often hampered by things like her skin color (not being a lighter skin person of color), and her weight. Hollywood is extremely hesitant about casting or writing fully fledge characters for people who aren't thin. This is still very much a real thing with Hollywood. So it absolutely wouldn't surprise me if this was still an issue for her on Glee. Even if not directly from the creators (though it might be there as well), but thats absolutely something studio people would bring up.
And the final one is the reality that this is a tv show. So you are going to have competition where the Glee club wins, when you very well might thank the other team did better. Nope Glee's was better. Or they might loser and you think they are better. Nope here they were worse.
Finn is the make lead, driven by his voice. Is his the best voice for the males? In universe it is, until we are told otherwise, regardless of what we hear. You might be told that a character can't sing at all completely tone deaf. And yet that character might actually sing material in a couple numbers and sound perfectly fine. Nope that person is still tone deaf.
Because the show always hoped material would get released, thus help generate more money and help the production cost of the show. They are almost never going to have performers not try and do their best work. Even if the show's specific story is going to tell the audience something different.
Now Mercedes is said to have a great voice (and Amber absolutely does), but we are often told Rachel for the most part (though not always) is better. Whether that is what we hear or not, that is the in universe reality. They just aren't going to ask the actress to perform worse then she can simply to highlight the story (there are only a handful of examples of Glee doing this).

It baffles me how much they sleep on Mercedes. She's just as good if not better (in my opinion) than Rachel. Mercedes's one line at the end of the final song??? Incredible. She could absolutely do ANY of the parts that they for some bewildering reason think only Rachel can do.

Glee well have moments where characters in different locations are singling the same song. But in this case, if Rachel has her practice at the same time, there is an actually decent chance that they would be performing the same song. It's one of the seminal pieces for the lead character in Cabaret.
And she is a better singer than Rachel here. Because she's experienced the life of the main character of Cabaret. Thus her single has edges to it that Rachel's less experienced self wouldn't put into the piece.

Kristen Chenoweth who plays April is a big Broadway star. Kurt crying at the end of her performance wasn’t scripted. The actor really couldn’t believe he was getting to be working with her. In these early episodes the kids who weren’t in the pilot were only hired as background dancers so that’s why you don’t hear them sing or get lines. Once the show got picked up for a full season they get to have more to do.
