First Time Hearing 'Johnny Cash- Ain't No Grave' Music Reaction

Comments

Johnny Cash, an icon for Boomers, GenX, Millennials, GenZ and GenZ alike. First time I saw Johnny Cash was at the St. Paul Civic Center. Mom and Dad brought the whole family up from our farm in Southern Minnesota. Cost Pops a month and a half of wages, but he didn't care. We were poor, but Pops always found a way to build our morale. My Pops was outlaw country, just like The Man in Black, Amber. Speaking of Outlaw Country, may I offer up Cory Marks - Outlaws & Outsiders feat. Ivan Moody, Travis Tritt, Mick Mars. A Great tune with 30 million YouTube Views and in A List Rotation on my show on Rumble. Here's the link if you so perchance choose to partake. You're country, girl...outlaw country too. I can say i am not scared of Death because its like a sweet dark embrace but dying I hate. But as they say in The Shawshank Redemption "Get busy living or get busy dying." I choose the first.

"Elderly" Johnny Cash is my favorite part of his career. So much emotion and pain and soul in his voice. ❣️

I have this theory that the blues and country are musical cousins. It doesn’t matter what you look like or where you were born or where you come from. The blues and country is in the bones. It’s about “I have been through some shit and I’m going to tell you all about it”. It’s authentic. It’s in the eyes and the voice of every singer and their songs. Cash, Nelson, Haggard, Jennings, Pride, George Jones, those guys looked like they were 50 in their 30s. They weren’t the pretty boys of today’s country. Keith Urban? Please. It’s not about having a twang or being from the south. It’s in the bones.

Johnny Cash blends country, gospel, and blues into songs that feel like hymns, confessions, and ghost stories. They call him the Man in Black for a reason, his music carries the weight of sinners and saints, outlaws and lost souls, all walking that thin line between redemption and damnation.

Johnny Cash’s "Ain’t No Grave" sounds like Jacob Marley’s ghost dragging him to his final rest. Chains rattle doomsday piano tolls, and eerie organ swells, creating a haunting, funeral march. The banjo stumbles through ghostly rolls, while the drumbeat pounds like mortal chains dragging through dirt. Cash’s voice, shadowed and defiant, growls, "There ain't no grave that can hold my body down," less a plea, more a challenge to the reaper. A traditional gospel hymn, it feels like a ghost story—a man refusing to stay buried.

The movie you're thinking about is "Walk the Line" (2005) with Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash. And after that you should check out "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" (2007). It's basically a comedic version of the first movie starring John C. Reilly a.k.a. Dale from Step-Brothers.

My very first live concert was Johnny Cash at the Shrine Auditorium, 1967. The opening act was a young Glen Campbell (with John Hartford). Tip: 👉Try to search for a Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan duet.👍
