Iron Butterfly- In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Music Reaction)

Comments

The rest of the story goes that Doug Ingle, author, lead singer and organist had told the other members what the actual title was the next day. However, they were all so stoned the day they recorded, they just spaced out and sang it like that anyway!

Gary

Headphones on, lie on the bed and just listen…..bet the sheets are on the floor when the song ends! 😂

Jeffrey Passen

The lead singer was also "messed up" when he first sang it and Bushy misunderstood what he was slurring and wrote it down wrong

Marty B

That was the original intention. they changed the name when they realized no one could understand the lyric

Marty B

Try and imagine the scene: It's 1968, you've just graduated high school and "White Rabbit," "Born To Be Wild," and "Foxy Lady" came out on the radio. You could only hear the long version of "In-A-Gada-Da-Vida" if you played on a stereo at a party. Usually, it was in the basement (That 70s Show style) or an attic if you were lucky. Back in the day, everyone had a copy of this LP with a scratch somewhere in the middle where one of their friends toppled over and hit the record player.

John Sheehan

Funny thing is,the first time I heard it,I was pretty messed up(if you know what I mean).I thought that they were singing "In the Garden of Eden."

Mark

Who isn’t? LOL

Sweetish_Jeff_25

I imagine this is probably one of the biggest “makeout” songs ever made. ☺️ “The Simpsons” did a very funny take on this, too. The original title of the song was “In The Garden Of Eden”.

The first time I was introduced to Iron Butterfly’s "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was in The Simpsons (Season 7, Episode 4) Bart Sells His Soul. In the episode, Bart sneaks the song into church by passing it off as "In the Garden of Eden" by I. Ron Butterfly, leading to an unintentionally epic and hilarious performance. This scene forever cemented the song in my mind, and I can’t hear it without thinking of that moment!

Jake Sisk

You think this is trippy…..try Maggotbrain by Funkadelic 😂😂

Scott Alker

After you have seen “Manhunter” (1986) you will never hear this song the same way.

Sweetish_Jeff_25

How often do the Game of Thrones reactions come out?

Sauce209

By far the longest song/reaction we've had. A little indulgent. Speaks to a different time and mindset where music was more of a trip or experience. You buckle up. You go for the ride. Now I know Amber's not opposed to long songs. Cool. Dreaming of a Yes -- Close to the Edge or Rush -- 2112 reaction. May never happen. I can dream, can't I? Great reaction. Love the hairstyle!

Scott McCumber

This was definitely on the smoking rotation. Along with Sister Mary Elephant.

Jim Crawford

Or even Led Zeppelin's 'Moby Dick', where most of the song is a Bonzo drum solo.

Marc Lamoureux

...Black Sabbath's 'The Warning', where the whole thing clocks in at 10 minutes. Lyrically it's about 2-3 minutes with a long, winding Tony Iommi guitar solo in the middle. Just reminiscent in terms of the length and the solo in the middle.

Marc Lamoureux

I have never heard this longer version of this, always the shorter version. Reminds me of Black Sabbath's

Marc Lamoureux

puff, puff. pass :-)

Marc Lamoureux

The story was the guy that wrote it, when playing for the rest of the band--after drinking an entire bottle of wine--was slurring his words so badly that--in his highly altered state--'in the Garden of Eden' came out as 'In-a-gadda-da-vida'. Hilarious.

Marc Lamoureux

Should be having a smoke listening to this

Stephen

In an episode of the Simpson, Bart switched the song list with this song changing the title lyrics back to their original ones in the garden of Eden. The church members sang the whole song and were exhausted and the organ lady passed out after doing the final notes. 😂

Amber!! I have been waiting SO long for you to hear this version! BTW, you look gorgeous today with your long hair. This song was an anthem when I was a kid. I actually wore out the LP three times and was able to re-buy it. Watching you listen to this was actually exciting! You fall into this song and it just takes you over, as you’ve seen. As usual, your analysis is spot on, I love listening to you and remembering what and how I felt those same things so many years ago! You’re an “old soul” for sure. Thank you, thank you, thank you for reacting to the long version of this song! It has been awesome. Peace and Love Gary P.S. for another magnificent long version try the Chambers Brothers “Time Has Come Today”. You will like it!

Gary

You are so much fun when you are having fun

Texadan

Haven't watch it all but do you know it was supposed to be "iN THE GARDEN OF EDEN?" Someone missheard and an epic was created.

Texadan

Welcome to the psychedelic side Amber. 😵‍💫🔮 So glad to see you have your “Amber Sway” back.

David Palmer

There is a Simpsons episode in which Bart switched the organists song for the church service, and the people grooved to it. After this song came out in 1967, bands started having drum solos on their records.

Gary Morse

I know you love Michael Jackson but have you seen the move moon Walker 🤔

AM radio stations would only play short songs. They had to squeeze in all those commercials! So they played a version of this song that was about 2 and a half minutes long. In my area, New Orleans, we finally got a FM station in 1970. FM radio would play the entire song. It was great! For the first time we got to hear the long version of Frankenstein by Edgar Winter (another great long song). AM radio finally gave in and started playing longer stuff when American Pie came out in 1971. But never anything this long during daytime hours.

Jim Crawford

Wow Amber…what a trip of a song for you.

David Palmer

This was the first album I ever purchased. My cousin (who passed away from cancer last month) and I went in together to afford the cost. We were still in Junior High and had to collect coke bottles and recycle them to get the money. We would each keep the album for a week at a time. What memories! Thanks for bringing them back!

Jim Crawford

Legend has it, the lyrics were initially supposed to be “In the Garden of Eden, honey…” But the first time they recorded it, the singer was stoned, and the words sounded much more like “Innagaddadavida.” That amused the band, rather than appalling them, and the name stuck I copied from the Internet I wasn’t sure but that’s what I heard as well
