Lou Reed- Walk on the Wild Side

a snapshot of New York city in 1972. Lou was giving the back up singers more credit than they were getting at the time. Instead of fading out, the back up singers got louder and louder at the end. Lou was one of those people who did what he did, and could not care less what anyone thought of it. The relations between black and white musicians at the time was a lot better than it is today, and it was white musicians who stood up for other races before it became more common. In 1969, the Allman Brothers had a black and one white drummer. the band and crew stopped at a restaurant in the south and their drummer Jaimoe, was refused service. The band and crew got up and said, "Well you don't serve us either" and left. Eventually, businesses got the message that they were losing money with that attitude. They figured, no matter what race you are, your money was the right color GREEN!

Using the term colored was not a slur at all, just think, the NAACP hasn't changed its name in over a hundred years. I think he purposely used it in the song because many places in this country still didn't accept segregation in 1972. I think he was trying to call attention to the ethnicity of his backup singers. Btw, in the US, his record label, RCA, released an alternate version omitting "colored" and talking out the reference to oral sex. Now you should listen to Dirty Boulavard by Lou Reed.

Lou Reed was also married to the very talented abstract Singer/Performance Artist Laurie Anderson. All are worth a listen.

There's several numbers from Lou Reed's live album called "Rock and Roll Animal" that I think you should do. The main ones I think you should do are "White Light/White Heat", "Intro/Sweet Jane" and "Heroin".
