A Hard Days Night (1964) Full Length

Comments

You should react to the movie Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. It has Peter Frampton, Beegees, Alice Cooper, Earth, Wind and Fire. Aerosmith. Steve Martin. It’s so good!

AMBER......WHAT happened to the ending? It was cut off, there is a whole other scene when they come off stage, and then they climb When into a helicopter where granddad is handcuffed to, with the photos on his lap, and as the door closes on the helicopter you seen Paul scolding him through the window and says "Get rid of those things" (the photos) and as the helicopter lifts in the air, photos flutter down and then the credits are over all these GORGEOUS black and white "head shots" photos of each them that fill the entire screen while the credits run. A shame that you didn't see it through the end and throught the credits, lots of great photographs. George ends up in that modeling office because when he looks up at the sign above the door in the hallway, he THINKS he is going to the canteen, but he doesn't see that it says it is "OPPOSITE" and walks into that office, THINKING he was going into the canteen. When he sits down, and you see that man behind the guy who is talking to him, MOUTHING "GEORGE HARRISON" he is the ONLY ONE in that room that recognizes George (that is when the man says "Don't breathe on me Adrian" ) The rest of them have NO clue who he is. I was 17 when this movie premeired in the movie theaters in the summer of 1964, and I was (STILL AM) a "PAUL GIRL" from the moment I saw his photo on the cover of their first album in the states "MEET THE BEATLES" and DEFINITELY when I finally saw him live on their first appearance on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW Feb. 9, 1964, I thought he was the most GORGEOUS guy I ever laid eyes on. You can imagine then what it was like to see him on that big movie screen. We used to go for the first showing and stay all day through to the last showing of the night. Watching it over and over. We did that EVERY TIME we went to the theater during it's entire run. you could do that then. I always melted during "IF I FELL" during the concert scene, when the camera is on Paul's face and as he sings "WOULD LOVE TO LOVE YOU'"as he looks down as if he is looking right at you in the theater. The screams always hit a BIG CRESCENDO in the theater during that part when he looks down right into the camera. It does look as if he is looking at everyone in the movie theater. It gets me EVERYTIME I watch A Hard Day's Night on my DVD copy. It takes me back to that time, and sometimes I get emotional during that part. I have felt that way about Paul for all these years, the same way you feel for Ringo. SO HAPPY you are loving this movie! I hope you will react to some of the other Beatles and Beatle related films, that others have mentioned here. I won't repeat them. LOVED your reaction!!

I recommend watching "Across the Universe." A movie propelled by the music of the Beatles. I think you would love it. As a long time Beatles fan I found it to be very heartfelt and enjoyable.

It was so fun to see your reaction to A Hard Days Night! I joined your patreon to see the full reaction, and it was worth it. I don't know what other Beatles stuff you've watched, but my favorite Beatles biopic is Two of Us (2000). It's actually just about John and Paul. The movie tells the story of what might have happened on a day they spent together in New York after the Beatles broke up. Paul has said in interviews that he and John were watching Saturday Night Live together at John's NYC apartment when, live on air, SNL offered $3,000 to the Beatles if they reunited. John and Paul realized they could make it to the studio before the show ended, and considered heading over. Two of Us does a good job of showing a friendship of two people who were once connected at the hip but now have different lives. It's charming and heartfelt. There are some really fantastic documentaries too. My favorites are The Beatles: The First US Visit, Eight Days A Week, and Good Ol' Freda. That last one is actually a documentary about a young woman who became a secretary to the Beatles right as they were getting famous. Her story is wonderful and the documentary is very well made.

The "very clean" comments about Paul's grandfather was an inside joke for British audiences. The actor playing the grandfather was the star of a popular British sitcom "Steptoe and Son" about a junk dealer where his character was frequently referred to as a "dirty old man".

Tom Tattershall

Oh I fell even harder for Ringo after this

Some people always whining about cancel culture but are the biggest snowflakes that can't stand hearing something they don't like. Yes, the Beatles were and are still more popular than Jesus, and got tons of their albums burned because of it.

Michael R

Its so coincidental you posted this reaction. We are currently having a power blackout and I just played The Beatles movie Help to my son. After that ended I was wondering how I could stream A Hard Days Night. I was about to give up trying to find it and here you were. I'm looking forward to seeing you react to the others..Help, Yellow Submarine and even Magical Mystery Tour.

Great reactions, Amber. I enjoyed hearing the songs again. At 21m I think the card game is Baccarat. It also in one of the James Bonds books.

Bruce Hutton

This one is fun and silly in places but it does have a lot of great Beatles songs ♥️🙂 Amber The Beatles have so many good songs 😺

P.S. LOVE the t-shirt!

Amber, I’m so happy you got to watch this. So, The Beatles knew they wanted to be in a film, but they wanted it to be something meaningful where they wouldn’t just be the band in the background. This is essentially a fictionalized version of a day in the life of The Beatles. The instrumental pieces in the movie were composed by George Martin their producer. He would later have a falling out with the director Richard Lester which is why Martin didn’t return for “Help!” Each Beatle had a solo scene and Paul had one, too, but it was cut from the final print. Only photos from this scene are what survived. We do get a glimpse of Beatlemania and much has been made about that, but what some people fail to understand is that why The Beatles are more relevant than other pop stars and teen idols is because they changed the culture. That puts them in the icons category with Sinatra, Elvis, the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc. They all changed the culture. Also around this time, two young producers named Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson watched “A Hard Day’s Night” in the theater and it inspired them to create a television show about a band-“The Monkees”.

Another bit of trivia I remembered is when Ringo starts wandering the streets and an instrumental version of "This Boy" which was performed by the George Martin Ohchestra called "Ringo's Theme" is playing in the background, the guitar playing was done by a very underrated and virtually unknown to the public but very well known to the music industry is one Mr. Vic Flick. Mr. Flick played on countless hits from the 60s including the James Bond theme!!! Mr. Flick passed away on November 14th 2024.

Had so much fun watching this with you! Would you ever consider watching the Pink Floyd film "The Wall" ?

At this point [1964] they were between 22 and 24 years old, and they were a bunch of lighthearted jokesters. Just before this they had been playing bar gigs in Germany, with several performances each night, polishing up their playing ability. They had been wearing leather jackets and rough clothes, but when they came back to England, their manager cleaned them up, and made them wear suits to appeal to a broader audience. The Rolling Stones went the other way and became the bad boys of rock and roll, while the Beatles were the gentlemen of rock and roll. Of course that would not last with several controversies in the next 2 years. John Lennon exclaimed about the Beatles that "We are more popular than Jesus!" That led to a backlash against the Beatles, and they quit doing live appearances, to experiment in the studio. That led to the creation of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the Beatles becoming more popular than ever.

Great to see you fangirling out to The Beatles. This movie is so much fun. I love Ringo, too, and he is pretty adorable in this!

Meryl Lim

The instrumental song they’re playing when Ringo is walking around the city alone with his camera is called “This Boy”. It’s a Lennon-McCartney composition that you should definitely check out. Probably my best favorite Beatles 3-piece harmony with John Paul and George all sharing one mic. Best one to react to is their live performance of that song at the Ed Sullivan show.

Michael R

Around. 5:26, when you wondered what John was doing with the Coke bottle…He was “snorting coke.” 😄 Gotta keep an eye on that one. So many verbal and visual jokes go zipping by in this movie! I sure missed that joke when I first saw this movie at the age of 8 or 9.

The writer of the film spent a few days with them and then wrote this based on their personalities. They just wanted to show what their life was like at the time. One thing about the Beatles is they really WERE cheeky and irreverent and at the time, that was definitely not the norm for "stars." It was like a breath of fresh air which really added to their popularity.

Stephanie Ovak

I'm 70 and I can remember the first Beatles radio hits on WLS in Chicago. Then there was BBC TV footage of them playing inside The Cavern Club that was shown on the evening news when their first US tour and the Ed Sullivan Show appearance were announced. Beatlemania was already in full swing by the time they arrived in New York. It was in this wave of hysteria that "Hard Days Night" was released in the theaters. It was the closest that many of us were going to get to seeing them. While watching this with you, I realized I never heard "She Loves You" other than the first 3 words in the theater. The screaming was too overwhelming. Seeing the cuts of the audience swirling around on the screen gave you the illusion that you were at a Beatles concert. It was terminal sensory overload! Thanks for bringing back that memory. P.S. My guilty pleasure is George bewildering the teen marketers, like the Infant confounding the Pharisees

John Sheehan

Yes! It's so good! Also the beatles starred in another Live action film called "Help!" I think you'd enjoy.

Melody Netherton

Ringo is still touring. I’m seeing him next month. He will be 85 in July! His new country album is fire!

Michael R

I absolutely love your love for the AND I LOVE HER. Same here. You’re right about it getting better every time you hear. It’s my favorite Beatle song along with IN MY LIFE. I’m so happy you got to this movie. What was strange it ended immediately without the rest of the finish. Didn’t know if you knew that. If you like Ringo. The next Beatle movie is HELP and it’s a Ringo story in a way. More great songs and their humor again shows. HELP!!

Ron Shimon

Clean is a joke on dirty old man and an inside joke because when they first met their manager, who made them famous, Paul was late because he was taking a bath. The manager was angry, but George quipped "he's very clean" and everyone laughed and it broke the tension.

Tim

There’s a movie called “Across the Universe” you would love!! The songs of the Beatles provide the sonic framework for a musical tale of romance, war and peace.

Ryan Garcia

The Beatles mean a great deal to me and I love this film!!!! This film is basically just the four of them being who they were at the time!! For those that don't know, of the two young ladies George and Paul meet on the train and she was the only one allowed to sit in the baggage cage when their are playing cards and sang "I Should Have Known Better" is the beautiful blond Patti Boyd! She was George Harrison's first wife and she also married Eric Clapton. They both wrote several songs about her but the stand out songs are the beautifully amazing "Something" by George and Eric wrote "Layla" and Wonderful Tonight" about here! The main cast consisted of quite a few actors that are famous in Britain but not so much in the US. There is a ton of trivia in this movie, it so fun to watch! John Lennon's beloved Gibson J-160E acoustic/electric guitar that he used in this film and used to record such hits as "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You" went missing at The Beatles Finsbury Park Christmas Show in 1963. It resurfaced in 2014, after it was confirmed to be John's it sold at an auction in November 2015 for $2.4 Million!!!!

MAV293 (MARK)

OMG I am so excited to watch this with you! Thanks so much for this one!

Barb Just Barb

Do their Help! film next. Also if you’re looking for a couple of Beatles tunes to react to, you’re missing two great ones: “Let It Be” and what is colloquially known as “The Long One”. The Long One is a medley they did on their B-side of their Abbey Road album. It’s meant to be listened to all at once. It’s a collection of incomplete songs they all had that they wanted to use but didn’t know what to do with them. They came up with this medley. I really recommend you look it up and react to the whole thing. Like anything Beatles, it won’t disappoint.

Michael R

Let’s go! So awesome you got to this film. By the way, the blonde girl inside the train cage with them playing I Should Have Known Better is Pattie Boyd. She was an extra in the film and that’s where George met her. They then got married and when they got divorced she married Eric Clapton. She has inspired many songs from both of them, including George’s “Something” and “I Need You” and Eric Clapton’s “Layla” and “Wonderful Tonight”. She’s still alive.
