The Beatles- Helter Skelter (Music Reaction)

Comments

Do you think you’d ever want to watch Mad Men?

Brian Shapiro

just to let you know the live one you reacted to before, wasn't really the Beatles, Paul and wings i believe

'blisters on my fingers' is kind of a funny line. Not that it's a dumb line or anything...just that so many guitarists did. Steve Ray Vaughan--amongst others--used to use Super Glue on the callouses on his fingers. Tony Iommi (of Black Sabbath) famously lost the tips of the index & middle fingers on his right hand (he is/was a lefty guitarist) in a freak industrial accident BEFORE Black Sabbath. While not blisters or callouses, still crazy to think about playing a guitar like that!

Going off the Charles Manson comment, U2 did a cover of Helter Skelter (off Rattle & Hum, I think). Bono starts it off by saying "This is a song Charles Manson stole from the Beatles. We're stealing it back!" Epic, I think...kinda gives you goosebumps, especially when you know THAT whole story.

[ I feel alive ] wonderful to hear

P.S. Amber I love the t-shirts you wear and you never fail to be stunningly gorgeous. Keep on rocking!

Here is a brilliant mashup of this song and “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin that someone did years ago. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/9VhW67Ya8jo?si=cNTMtLEBZO5adOSd

This song should prove that Paul was anything but a soppy balladeer. George supposedly was running around the studio with a lit ashtray on his head. George Martin was on holiday during this session which was being produced by Chris Thomas. Amber, if you ever get the chance online or offline to listen to The Beatles at The Star Club, it will blow your mind. They are playing punk rock live in 1962 and it kicks ass.

Reportedly, the Who song was “I Can See For Miles”. Great song, too.

Helter Skelter was inspired by a Pete Townshend of The Who interview which McCartney read, in which Townshend described a song The Who had recorded which was the loudest, rowdiest they’d ever recorded. McCartney then listened to it and didn’t think it was that nasty. But then decided to do that for The Beatles and wrote what would become the first heavy metal track. The Beatles always innovating and influencing others.

Probably best to react to ‘the long one’, the medley from Abbey Road. It’s a collection of unfinished songs they all had that they didn’t know what to do with but didn’t want to waste. So they blended them all together and it’s one of the best things they’ve done. That, and Let it Be and The Long and Winding Road are pending reactions.

In the day, The White Album blew a lot of folks' minds. But Helter Skelter was special. You had to be careful about who was in the room when this came on. You're right, Amber, nothing like this had ever been heard before. The sound was terrifying if you weren't already a fan. And many people were decidedly NOT fans of the Beatles. It's hard to imagine now that The Beatles still were a decisive symbol of non-conformity to the end. Many are aware of the connection to Charlie Manson and the backlash that came in the wake of the tragedy at the Tate house. Unfortunately, this song soon acquired a stigma in pop culture. To Beatles fans, though, nothing was going to stop us from opening our bedroom windows and sticking our stereo speakers in them for everyone on the block to enjoy!

Want to be sure to point out it's John playing bass on this. John and George played bass on several tunes, were both excellent, and deserve recognition. And Ringo really did have blisters on his fingers after they had bashed their brains out for like 21 takes!

Also,I can't let a Beatles reaction go by without suggesting my favorite Beatles song,"Let It Be".It is a Paul McCartney masterpiece and the fact that the same genius that came up with "Helter Skelter" could also compose "Let It Be" boggles my mind.

I don't know if you know the crazy fact about this song, but it actually was what caused Charles Manson to start his killing spree. He thought the song was the Beatles message to start the race wars that he thought the killings would cause. His cult followers who committed the murders even wrote "Helter Skelter" in blood on the refrigerator at one of the crime scenes.

Mark

You need to react to the Beatles song titled THE END it has one of my favorite guitar solos. I believe there were four guitars in this solo. Check it out. Tell me what you think.

Thomas Horton

This song has a cult following.
