Hereβs a little copy paste from Wikipedia. βThe 1982 release of The Number of the Beast created some controversy for the band. The artwork and title track led to Christian groups in the United States branding the band as Satanists, encouraging people to destroy copies of the release.β The whole point back then was to be purposely shocking and boundary breaking

LOL Black Sabbath--and by extension Ozzy, yes, Iron Maiden, along with most of the hair bands, KISS, FOR SURE--some people thought KISS was an acronym for Knights In Satan's Service!! (you'd love the movie Detroit Rock City...plays upon that theme heavily!) Twisted Sister was another one, for sure, leading to Congressional hearings! All the talk for years about backward masking and the messages allegedly hidden therein--EVEN IN BEATLES TUNES!!! That last one, I think it was on Abbey Road, the allegation was that if one song--forget which one--was played backwards it said 'Paul's dead' (not to mention the album cover theory.)
