I lived in Johnson City until I was in my early 30s, then moved to Knoxville where you've got "Thunder Rd" aka Kingston Pike. I actually used to live right at Bearden Hill where the car crash that killed a moonshiner took place. There's a lot of sordid history in our neck of the woods!

2025-07-04 21:27:45 +0000 UTCThis song was huge hit when I was in college, 1988, especially in Tennessee where I'm originally from. Specifically Northeast TN, as the song is based in Johnson County (Mountain City), just north of where I was born. When I was growing up, there was always moonshine being made in those mountains, and when I was about ten or so, there was a huge bust of the other crop just a couple of miles from my house. I still remember the helicopters circling and agents coming and going. It was always an adventure up in those hills and hollers!
