Etta James- I'd Rather Go Blind

Etta James was a firecracker. She even bashed Beyoncé. She did not suffer from low self esteem, rightly so. She later retracted her remarks and said it was a joke. Basically, she loved Bey in Cadillac Records but was irritated about Bey singing At Last at Obama's inauguration and other places. She later said she was just feeling left out since it was her song.

Watch two (or more) versions of the same song and react to both in the same video then have listeners vote on their favorite in the comments. To start off, I would suggest Gloria Gaynor's version, the original, of "I Will Survive" vs the version done by Cake.

Another example you've already checked out: JANIS!! and her live performance of 'Ball and Chain'!! Freddie King (aka The Texas Cannonball) does a song called 'I'd Rather Be Blind'. Not sure of the story behind that song...like if it's a version of Etta's song, but it's definitely one to check out. Different lyrics, same message: he'd rather be blind than see the woman he loves go. And Freddie for sure HOLLERS!! He certainly hollers his way through THAT song, and he's a big 'ol drink of water (6'5", 300lbs) so he had the lungs for it!

2025-07-11 22:44:53 +0000 UTCAmber, as a young woman from the South who has been doing song reactions for over three years, the perfect documentary for you to react to is Muscle Shoals. You will hear directly from the real Etta James and the folks who produced her music. I tell you that much just to get you interested. I want you to be way more than pleasantly surprised with the rest of it. Etta James is just one of many that you already know.
