Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Comments

Pirates would frequently raid coastal settlements because they were right on the water and relatively easy to take, just like the vikings did several hundred years earlier.

Sem Vikingr

Came here to say that. It was such a clever bit of writing, wasn't it?

Sem Vikingr

Grew up in So Cal so Disneyland was a part of my childhood. Seeing some of the classic ride scenes (like the prisoners whistling for the dog & Jack's winking line about the dog "never moving" were such a treat.

J. Alan

You’ve got to admit, having a monkey that could fetch things for you would be pretty useful

Samuel Jenks

I was going to say the same thing but thought I'd scroll through the comments first to see if someone beat me to it. I'd also add that Paul McCartney has a cameo appearance as Jack Teague (Jack Sparrow's uncle) in 'Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Debra

YESS so happy you're doing these!!!

Miriam A

I enthusiastically agree with the “Black Sails” recommendation!!! 🏴‍☠️

Ryan Garcia

I have loved Johnny Depp since Nightmare on Elm Street through 21 Jump Street, Platoon, Donnie Brasco, Cry Baby and all his Tim Burton characters but, weirdly, I crush on Capt Jack Sparrow hard... For more awesome pirate stuff with a hint of real pirates try out the series Black Sails. It's like a prequel to the book Treasure Island. Some real pirates and their background stories and a couple of literary pirates. And, yes, Pirates did pillage towns. Blackbeard blockaded Charles Town (Charleston, SC). Cartagena and the Barbary coast and places closer to the Caribbean. just think. It's easier to find a port to pillage vs happening across a ship in the open water. Even in normal shipping lanes it would be a needle in a haystack without specific information about a ships schedule. And they are calling Elizabeth "poppet". It's a term of endearment. Davy Jones Locker is a watery grave

Marty B

Fun fact: the female pirate is Gamora from Gaurdians of the Galaxy

Shaynge

Hi from England, nearly 5 weeks since your last HOTD reaction, have you fallen out of love with the show?

Peter Walker

The Scott’s Tots mug is awesome!

Anthony Rodriguez

I love these movies. All of them! If I remember correctly, they have more scenes after the credits. You don't want to miss those! Oh and that music score is still as great as the first time I saw the movie!

Jayce

Keira Knightley played Elizabeth in this and she played Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice.

Valerie Boyco

After the Credits!!!!! Leads you to the next one!!!

Woohoo! One of the best series of movies, imo. Disney screwed over Johnny real bad. He got a little P.O.'d after he made them Lots of money, (he proved them all wrong with his highly watched divorce case with Amber Heard). You'll see her in the Aquaman movies. Elizabeth's dad (Johnathan Pryce) was also "The High Sparrow" in Game of Thrones who made Cersei walk naked through the streets of King's Landing. And if you like swashbuckling, watch Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World with Russell Crowe. Fantastic actor & movie.

If you want a great period peace series the HBO/Cinemax Warrior series (3 seasons) is great and based on the writings of Bruce Lee. HBO's Rome series (2 seasons) is also really good.

Andrew Ramos

You should rewatch the next movie just to refresh yourself, as you need to know what happens there to fully follow the third movie, At World's End. After this one, At World's End is my next favorite of the entire series. They could have stopped the series after completing the trilogy, in my personal opinion, especially with the coming and going of various cast members after the third movie.

This was a fun, comedic adventure, for sure. I would say Will Smith was more an apprentice than a simple helper--if not a full on blacksmith. The Black Pearl pirate with the fake eye that kept falling out...he was played by Mackenzie Crook. He was the wildling warg in GOT and also played Gareth in the UK Office--the British Jim. Now...the Jack Sparrow / Littlefinger comparison??? Is that really fair?? LOL I don't think Jack Sparrow is anywhere near as twisted and self serving as Littlefinger...and no one ever went to bat for Littlefinger! 1:52:26 "...dead giveaway..." I see what you did there! :-) The fact that you kept saying you don't remember much of the second movie, the kept asking "What's Davy Jones' Locker?": confirmed. LOL It's basically a euphemism for were sailors go when they die at sea. The creepy villain in the second one is, in fact, Davy Jones, played brilliantly by Bill Nighy. He was also the Chief Inspector in beginning of Hot Fuzz, as well as the immortal vampire Viktor in the Underworld series. Viktor and Davy Jones share similar speech patterns and ticks. Both great characters. To be fair, so wasn't the Chief Inspector, but you only got him for that one scene.

I thought this movie resolved and completes itself. There was no need for sequels. Masterpieces don't need them. Only greed would drive that in my humble opinion.

Charles Lookabaugh

Haaahh, I see what u did there.

The Mad Icelander

The young woman pirate, anamaria, is a very young Gamora (Zoe saldana) She almost quit the business because of her experience working this movie So if she did quit, she never would've graced the screens for Marvel Let that sink in

Karl Kraus

I'm just going to pop in here and say Bridgerton has AMAZING period piece costumes. Absolutely stunning... the eye candy is just a bonus.

Rowan Figueroa

I think it's a damn shame he's not won an Oscar. He deserves one.

Rowan Figueroa

This movie had absolutely no business being as good as it was. It's old enough now that I don't mind calling it a classic. Didn't need to be a franchise, but if that was a 1 and done it still would be fantastic.

pawpaw72546

Love this movie. Johnny Depp styled his portrayal of Jack Sparrow on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. In the sequels, Keith Richards plays Captain Teague, Jack Sparrows father.. Mad props to them both. I almost forgot about Anamaria, "you'll get that boat". Such a young Zoe Saldaña. You might remember her as Gamora from The Guardians of the Galaxy.

Steven Costa

will is technically the blacksmith's apprentice but might as well be the one in charge due to the fact his boss is, of course, a drunk who is passed out for an x amount of hours will makes the orders but doesn't get the credit because, on paper, he isn't the creator he makes all of those swords in his spare time i guess

Karl Kraus

Fun fact: none of the “Pirates” movies have been rated Rrrrr. 😉

Sweetish_Jeff_25

Yes, it's still hot in OK!

I was 32 when this came out in 2003 a Disneyland freak remembering how could they ever make a movie based on a ride and was pleasantly surprised that it turned out so well along with the first 3 films. Reactors never comment on the dog teasing the chain of keys in it's mouth just like it does on the ride both at Disneyland and DisneyWorld versions. My weekend is now set with watching this and Superman vs Batman reactions! Thank you!!!🏆🫵🫡👏

K Dub

if you like to watch more period pieces, especially the british side, take a look at master and commander, the far side of the world, another movie that competed at the 2004 oscars show with pirates and the lord of the rings It has russell crowe and paul bettany from Marvel

Karl Kraus

I'm so excited! This is one of my very favorite series of movies!!!! And the music of the soundtrack is so me of the best in my opinion!!!!! You mentioned Johnny Depp's actions and movements in this movie. He said that he based his look, actions, etc. somewhat from Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones!!! Johnny was just perfect for this role, no one could have done it better. Add in Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly (and yes she was in Pride & Prejudice) as well as the other supporting actors, pure perfection! ❤️❤️❤️ ⚔️⚔️⚔️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Debi Bailey

when this first released, everyone thought it would flop since it was yet another adaptation of a Disney park ride but lo and behold it was a massive success! more than anyone thought possible! Johnny Depp obviously stole the show here and was rewarded with a Best Actor nod at the oscars and Disney rarely gets that sort of recognition; that oscar season it even went up against other heavy hitters with 4 more nominations (for the visuals and sound ) including the lord of the rings 3 and obviously lost but still a big event in the studios history, a live action movie having a respectable amount of nominations in the one of the biggest years for movies in recent memory because of that success, disney doubled down and ordered the producers to film the second and third movies back to back, like the lord of the rings did So as a result, the story kind of gets messy at some points but were still fun to watch Can't wait to see dead man's chest and at world's end!

Karl Kraus

She gave us some Henry Cavill & Orlando Bloom on back to back days!! I’m overwhelmed!!!

Ryan Garcia

Oh yummmmmy!

Rowan Figueroa

Oh, nice surprise! This movie is fun & Johnny Depp is perfectly cast as the iconic swashbuckling mischievous lovable Jack Sparrow.

The Mad Icelander

This should be fun! Love POTC! Still hot enough in Oklahoma for tank tops? I’m in Canada, no more tank tops. 😆 🥶

Richard C

This is one of my favorite movies. Enjoy ♥️♥️♥️
