2025-09-25 03:57:03 +0000 UTCSee in the book it was never specified who Hugh's (the blacksmith) Targaryen parent was but I actually really like that they chose to make Princess Saera Targaryen his mother because she is a bit of a forgotten character due to her running away to Essos and never wanting/not caring to make a claim at the Great Counsel (the counsel that took place in the beginning of Season 1 Ep 1 when they chose Viserys over Rhaenys) That makes Hugh first cousins with Viserys, Daemon, Aemma (Rhaenyra’s mom) and Rhaenys because Princess Saera is one of the younger sisters to their parents Maybe when you have a chance you can look up the lore behind King Jahaerys and Queen Alysanne’s time on the throne and their children (theres 13 of them total but 4 of them died very young) because they’re honestly some of the most tragic Targaryen characters but they’re also some of the most interesting in my opinion. But there are potential spoilers if you go looking up their stories so maybe wait for HOTD to be over with lol With that being said though… That gives Team Black 7 dragon riders: Rhaenyra, Daemon, Jace, Baela, Addam, Hugh and Ulf. But a lot of Team Blacks dragons and their riders are either very young or inexperienced when it comes to fighting in the battles.. Besides Daemon and Caraxes, Rhaenys and Meleys were the most experienced. Vermithor (Hugh’s dragon) is very experienced in battle but again Hugh is a new rider so their bond needs more time to be built upon. And although Team Green still has four adult dragons, Aegon and Sunfyre are clearly out of comission at this time and Halaena doesn’t ride Dreamfyre often enough for battle. So that leaves them with just Prince Daeron and his young dragon Tessarion and Vhagar who is the biggest dragon during this time.

Lowborn dragonriders are going to blur what was once a very clear line between classes. 39:00 Hugh's mother is very likely to have been Saera Targaryen, a daughter of King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne. If so, her brother would have been Baelon Targaryen, the father of Viserys and Deamon and she'd have been their aunt. That makes Hugh Daemon's cousin. Saera was involved in a salacious scandal at a young and, and banished to Oldtown to have her bahavior "corrected." She escaped to another city and when to work in a pleasure house. Interesting note: Hugh's grandfather King Jaehaerys rode the dragon Vermithhor.
