I'm a theatre snob. I complain about most Hollywood adaptations of Broadway musicals. Being so used to the video of this show live with Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote) as Mrs Lovett, Helena Bonham Carter's voice feels thin and week, and the whole thing has been made even darker, with way, way more spurting blood for no reason. A Little Priest, the song you said was your favorite, is supposed to be a rousing, laughing, joyful yet dark song, but here it's played as subdued and angry. FYI, exceptional Hollywood musical adaptations: * Wicked * Little Shop of Horrors (except the last 10 minutes, where they completely changed the ending) * Godspell * West Side Story There are a few others that I can't think of right now
