Bridge over the River Kwai sensational film. (Alec Guiness aka Obi-wan Kenobi one of its lead actors)

I was in the Army, not the Marines, but boot camp was very much like this back in the day. Now, there's more emphasis on mental health and feelings. The mental health aspect is very much needed, but not hurting feelings? I disagree with that 1000%. Crazy fact - Lee Irmey was never a drill sergeant. He went into the audition with pages and pages of insults. He was hired instantly. He became known as America's Drill Sergeant. The actor who plays Leonard Lawrence, aka Private Gomer Pyle, was the lead investigator on Law and Order Criminal Intent (actor Vincent D'Onofrio).

One of the best war movies ever made! This is my #3 favorite after The Longest Day and Bridge Over the River Kwai. When Leonard starts talking to himself, he appears to be mentally unhinged, aka Section 8. All those cadences while they're marching are to make sure everyone is on the same foot and as morale boosters. I sang cadences in the Army, and we made up our own from time to time.

My daddy is a retired drill sergeant and he made us watch this before we were old enough to go to school. I’m the third child and I was the first one who decided to go to college. He was mad he told me if anybody should go it should’ve been me. I asked were there gonna be people like him there and he said yes. And I told him that’s why I’m not going.

Platoon next! In basic training we had a guy that had a resting smile face. I watched a drill sergeant walking 30 yards away suddenly beeline to him and ask him wtf he was smiling at and berate him for 10 minutes. That sergeant had nothing to do with our group he just happened to be walking by! In basic training drill sergeants use every little detail to unsettle a person and generate insecurity. Several times my drill sergeant ripped up my bed after inspecting it saying I made it wrong. For a while I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what detail I was missing. It only took me about a week to realize my bed was perfectly fine and they just randomly destroy people's beds to keep everyone from gaining confidence. After that I slept like a baby. The artificial anxiety the drill sergeants were generating went away for me. But a lot of trainees never realized many of their "mistakes" weren't mistakes and they were just being gaslit. Those people were anxious for the whole time.
