Boyz n the Hood (1991)

Boyz n the Hood (1991)

Thats how it was growing up in the 80's and 90's. A lot of life lessons taught in those decades. God I miss those times.

Steven Garcia

props to you, brother. You made it out. Keep moving ahead!

Hey Amber; this movie was a cultural milestone when it was released in 1991; some others that are HIGHLY recommended: New Jack City 1991 Menace 2 Society 1993 Poetic Justice 1993 Higher Learning 1995 (The last 3, you will notice elements of these films also were incorporated into ‘Don’t be a Menace…’)

Jeff Darensbourg

Did kids talk that way in the 80s? Yup...not only in SCLA. Pick a hood, any hood. In my hood, the South Bronx back in the 70s and 80s, you better be quick with the lingo and better with your hands.

terrince autry

🤣 We’re not worried about “conclusions” that first time. Actually being in the situation at all is more than enough to consider the deed done!!

Ryan Garcia

I had a summer job at a movie theater when this came out. This movie was a cultural earthquake at the time and has been cited by film critics as one of the best and most important films of the 20th century

Regina Wilkins

"Menace II Society" is another classic from the time period. Also "Juice" and "South Central"! All part of the Wayans parody!

I got arrested at 11. That was by far not my last time in cuffs. My neighborhood was not as bad but we still had drive by's. Sawed off shotgun's were heavily used, hell, all guns were. I lost way too many friends to this and to drugs or suicide. It is designed to keep you down. Furious was 100% right. The whole time I was watching this and even right now there have been helicopters and sirens going. It's actually abnormal to NOT hear gunshots nightly. I get nervous when it's too quiet. I also live where most of the criminals live so we are slightly safer, as you don't tend to shit where you eat. That's not always true but overall it is in my neighborhood. We grew up WAY faster. Too fast. By the time I was in my 20's I felt old. At 50 I feel ancient. I never thought I'd live to see 30. Every year after that has been beloved.

Please react to “fruitvale station” by Ryan Coogler with Michael b Jordan.. based on a true story of the murder of Oscar grant in Oakland California New Year’s Day 2009 by a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer..

Marco

(1993) "Blood in Blood Out" another good movie.

Mack

29:50 So, the lady on the left, Alysia Rogers, was the ultimate crush for a lot of guys. The only thing is, she didn’t act all that much.

Jason Kennebrew

Can I recommend two films not related to this one, but related to the sad happenings this week Amber? The first wives club, and When Harry met Sally. First wives club has Diane Keaton (who passed in October) and the legend that is Maggie Smith (McGonagall from Harry Potter who died last year) in it and its an empowering movie for women, and both movies are related to Rob Reiner, RIP to them all.

You should watch menace 2 society and south central those are the other 2 main movie from don't be a menace to south-central. While drinking your juice in the hood

Maddog48

I could totally relate to Doughboy at the end of the movie, when he says that the news shows violence in foreign countries and not the murders and violence in our neighborhoods. Another good movie similar to this is Menace II Society (1996) and Higher Learning (1995). You could also watch Straight Outta Compton (2015 - unrated directors cut version) which also mentions police brutality. This movie is eye opening to a lot of people who don't hear a lot about life in the hood. I'm glad you watched it, Amber. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Love this movie. Ice Cube did a fantastic job in his first acting role. For another perspective of the gang wars in the 80's/90s check out Colors starring Sean Penn, Don Cheadle, Robert Duvall, Maria Conchita Alonso, Damon Wayans and one of the most interesting characters in the movie Trinidad Silva. Told from both the cops/gang division and the gang members perspectives. in regards to this movie... never really understood why Cube locked the slide back when he was flashing his weapon on Crenshaw. It looked like he's gonna chamber a round but he locked the slide back. strange. And The main thing I disagree with in this film is from a Vietnam and prior perspective yeah it probably not good to be in the service but the 80's and later was a whole different world. There may have been some self inflicted segregation on the mess decks but everyone had/has the same opportunities and possible outcomes in the service. I recommend it to anyone with ambition looking to pay for college, and learn how to lead people. And I dont know if you've watched Men of Honor? True story. Cuba plays Carl Breshear. First Black American to graduate from Navy Diving and Salvage school. there's more but if you wanna watch it I don't wanna spoil it.

Marty B

The car bouncing on 2 wheels was a "lowrider". A classic car modified with hydraulics that can lift and bounce with the flick of a switch. The lowrider culture has existed since the 1940's in Los Angeles and has car clubs and car shows around the world.

sb

Angela Bassett was the oldest main character at age 32 while filming...Laurence Fishburne was 29...Tyra Ferrell, (Ricky & Doughboy's mom) was 28...Cuba Gooding Jr. was 22...Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut were 21...Nia Long and Regina King were 19 and the director, the late John Singleton was just 22.

sb

Very true.

Rowan Figueroa

Fun fact Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne (the parents) also played Tina and Ike Turner in the movie What's Love Got to Do with It (1993).

Brandon H

Dang Amber - You don’t recognize Laurence Fishburn? Morpheus from The Matrix and countless other movies. Don’t think you recognized Angela Bassett either(Queen Ramonda in Black Panther, How Stella got her Groove back). That’s ok, they’re really young here so.

The Mad Icelander

If you would like another eye opening movie from this time and genre, Fresh 1994 image a teenage little finger with good intentions.

Uncle Darnell

Love your videos Amber, if you liked Boyz n the Hood, you need to watch , Menace to Society, I think you will like that movie too.

freddy constancio

Sad part, although l.a. has changed a bit since then, but the reality, nothing has changed.

Jesse Calvillo

That's as nice as Cube gets! :D

Chris Carman

Rip to them both for real.. really terrible what happened to Rob and his wife.... its a shame that in the end of Boyz n the Hood 'Increase The Peace" is a phrase that's needed in todays world

Reggie Riobe

Something I just realized (rewatching this movie after many years) and just corroborated with some other fans online: the early scene when the four kids are walking on the railroad tracks to see a dead body--- is a total shout-out to Rob Reiner's "Stand by Me" (right down to the little kid who gets a beloved item snatched away by an older bully). R.I.P. John Singleton R.I.P. RR

Chris Carman

Now you need to react to some Ice Cube music... 'It Was a Good Day'... Any Old School Cube is good... But that's a safe place to start.🤘💜

JukeboxPreacher

A lot of Black Films of the 90s give that real feeling with a emotion/fun story whether it was a Romance. Hood Film (Urban) Action. Drama. Comedy.. the 90s was a hell of a time for black movies and tv

Reggie Riobe

My story was def similar…. Born in the country…. Moved to the hood after my dad went to prison for selling Dope… Had to duck bullets and hearing sirens all night… Mom working two jobs older brother was the man of the house… After dad got out of prison he moved me and my older bro out of the hood…. We watched as those we grew up with go to jail time after time… Me and my brother both graduated and went to college on bball scholarships…. Older brother graduated from Ok. State and played in NBA.. now a prominent artist in OKC.. I Played one year at OK. State then went into Navy… Not too many escape the hood… we were fortunate to have our version of Furious Styles in our lives to guide us… I def appreciate the reaction and although it was sad u got to see a very accurate representation of the Hood…

Southern Gentleman

Moral of the story- Only a father can teach a boy how to be a man

Dennis Fawcett

Morehouse and Spelman Great atlanta representation here 👌 Too bad there was a georgia tech cap for though 😑 (bulldogs fan)

Karl Kraus

Talking about Crack and how it got here… I would definitely recommend Snowfall…

Southern Gentleman

Southern Gentleman

Poetic Justice 1993 & Higher Learning 1995 are two other great films By John Singleton

Reggie Riobe

This is such a classic movie.. Directed by the late John Singleton this was his first movie that he directed and was Nominated for Best Director at the Oscars back in 1992 This was a great reaction Amber.. for real

Reggie Riobe

John Singleton's best!!

Patt SanKings

“Menace 2 Society”.

Kyndu

A young Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne! Yes, he’s the granddad on Blackish and was Morpheus in the Matrix!

Anthony Caples

This is true definition of the Hood in the 80s…. Growing up in the 80s in the hood myself I experienced some of this….

Southern Gentleman

Aye Lil Man…… Catch !!!!

Southern Gentleman

“Gimme my brother’s ball back” was our favorite line to repeat during basketball practice in HS!!!
