Epic The Musical - Cyclops Saga Part 2 | Unedited Reaction

Comments

Yes, Polites was indeed holding the infant in his arms, I LOVE that you noticed! I recommend you do Wolfie's alternative animatics for Just a Man, it has a lot of heart, AND IT HAS SUBTITLES! I really really recommend it! Love your reactions AHH Patreon doesn't let me comment

I do like that it's more subtle* this way: you still get the notion that Odysseus knows better than to reveal his name just because, and it makes his yelling it at Polyphemus seem slightly less like a petty way to show Athena she's not the boss of him. * I'm still bitter about Hamilton and Angelica overexplaining every slightly witty bit of conversation they ever have in the show

Yasss I die and go to heaven every time I full belt "PUSH FOOOOOOO-O-O-WAAARD!" lol I swear my neighbours know Epic as well as I do whether they want to or not

I do love how Athena's high notes change with Odysseus :3 the pattern is something like WotM Alone - maintained high note With him, the first time - maintained high note while he sings a riff With him, second time - matches his riff Then in My Goodbye she sings his riff but the last one is the same maintained high note from WotM and it just perfectly shows how meets him where he's at then distances herself again later. I think in spite of her saying she doesn't want a friend, she absolutely does, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that (some spoilery so I won't dive into it) and I think it freaks her out just how much she cares about him, which is why she's so harsh and quick to withdraw when she realizes she can't control him anymore.

Yesss no spoilers but there was a version in the first draft when Ody refuses to give Athena his name in Warriors of the Mind and she says something like "well played, never give out your name if you don't have to, I wouldn't give you mine" and then he goes into the whole don't be modest, I know you're a goddess bit. I loved that and it really fit with the later "nobody" in Polyphemus, kinda bummed it's not in there anymore but what we have certainly works as well!

Yasss though I do wonder if she was JUST doing it to hurt him or if it was to teach him something. Like, she can't make him understand because she's a god and she can't tell him how the gods think and behave, but she knows that he understands his own limitations and weaknesses as "just a man" so she's using that echo to try and teach him, still. But yes, 100%, she wanted to hurt him because he hurt her.

Oh hey that was me! Well, probably me and like 18 other people, lol. Re ensemble vs named singers. Not much point me saying I'm telling the truth but here's Jorge explaining it, DON'T watch it until you're caught up tho because there's big spoilers for the next saga https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxBfDvOIRdc ETA okay if you already know Ruthlessness then there's no spoilers lol. Or... maybe? It references an unfinished song later in the whole thing but it's not released yet it's just rough draft so do with that what you will. Anyways, it's there when you want it, lol. Also yeah when you get to the whole brain blast bit between songs, I was actually waiting for you to suddenly realize who the cyclops was connected to from Percy Jackson, you mentioned you were a fan? I thought you'd twigged from there and given yourself a little aneurism or something xD I'm so glad you're enjoying it as much as you are. Also yeah I listened to this one expecting something more like Empty Chairs at Empty Tables and I got epic battle music and angry revenge like whoa more death stuff needs to be like this. I'm half hoping there's a moment later in the show where it looks like Ody is going to sink into grief and instead he remembers Polites singing Your Light (which is as of yet removed from the show) which is a SUPER upbeat song, moreso than Open Arms. Like no dude you don't get to be sad, he didn't want you to be sad. When life gets hard and when you're lost in the dark, let him be your light <3 OH MY GOD you giving relationship counselling to Ody and Athena killed me, I literally choked and now I'm crying with laughter, that was so funny xD Okay last edit I promise. a) If you want another great animatic alternative, mircsy's My Goodbye is phenomenal, far more emotional imo, and b) if you want to just finish off your feels, there's a fanvid mircsy has done with a fan-written reprise for Open Arms. It's not canon thus not a spoiler but basically Ody has a chance to speak with Polites spirit and it's a bit cheesy fanfic-y and not professional quality recording but oof my feels. Great vid as always man, looking forward to more.

“This is not the time to be sassy to your divine sugar mamma” omg I can’t be laughing out loud at work to this But in all honesty my goodbye broke my heart because they’re both just lashing out at each other and it goes just a little too far

the musical call backs as the sagas continue are SO GOOD!!! every single sing jn these sagas are so fun to blast and sing along with very loudly while driving. it’s a daily part of my drive to/from work

A little thing to know about is “Quick Thought”! Whenever Athena has some of her moments with Odysseus she uses quick thought so that all of it happens in the blink of an eye, as seen at the end of the open arms animatic with the Apple.

"Odysseus, this is not the time to start being sassy to your divine sugar momma" is not a sentence I expected to hear when I woke up this morning. But I'm glad I now have.

Fun fact: There is actually a motif in Warrior of The Mind and My Goodbye. In wotm, Athena at first sings “mind” very straight. She’s holding the high note and doesn’t waver. But Odysseus’s “mind” kinda has a rise and fall to it. Like “Miiİİiİiiİind”. (Sorry I’m not a musical theory person hahahaha) Athena later on goes with the float and starts to sing “mind” as the same with Odysseus showing that she also learns from him. But in My Goodbye, Athena starts with singing “Goodbye” the same with Odysseus’s “mind”. Until the final note where she holds the note and tear her bond with him. Also fun fact: all major characters in epic has their own intrumental or musical detail. For example, Athena’s motif is piano and the clock sound. Odysseus has a guitar and it is classical guitar when he’s emotional but electric guitar when he’s cunning. Penelope has the viola, Eurylochus has other crew members as supporting voices and Poseidon has trumpets, Polites has bright instruments like kalimba or marimba, Polyphemus has fiddle and synth, Zeus has electric brass synth and electric guitar. There is also a “danger is near” motif in The Horse and The Infant and Polyphemus (also in other songs but, spoilers). Check just before Zeus enters in The Horse and The Infants and “It’s almost too perfect” part in Polyphemus!

for a couple of seconds I legit thought the video had frozen 😂 "Odysseus, buddy" is also going to be living rent-free in my head

Bro knew from a young age that giving out your name to just anyone isn't a good idea, set up the 'nobody' trick even as he thought things would work out with Polyphemus and had no idea there were other Cyclopes... then straight-up doxxes himself. why, Odysseus.

draeonic 🪼

That moment you realized the connection to Ruthlessness was absolutely priceless. You will also start to hear more callbacks to different songs in the future.

In case you needed clarification: no Odysseus didn’t lose both of his friends, Eurylochus (his second-in-command) survived as well. As for the backing vocals; yeah you got the gist. Jorge did state that when a human character has backing vocals those voices come organically from the surroundings (eg the crew serving as backing vocals for Odysseus and/or Eurylochus - depending on the song). In contrast gods can do whatever they want because they’re gods. So Athena throwing that “just a man” callback at Odysseus was 100% intentional and meant to hurt him 😭
